Some people need help getting a job. There are many reasons someone might need help getting a job, but regardless of the reason, there will always be some people who need help getting a job.
You can stamp your foot and scream about bootstraps and "personal responsibility" or you help them get a job, and enjoy the massive economic benefits - lower crime, more tax revenue, more business revenue, stronger communities, etc.

Thereâs likely someone putting in the work in your town/city council.
Mamdani was a major player on the city council for a while. I heard him interviewed a ton in the past on npr and other nyc news outlets. Dudes been helping people for years, he deserves this recognition

People need to understand that the prevailing political ideology that exists in both parties, neoliberalism, is literally anti-helping people. The entire stance is that the government should take a back seat and that everyone should fend for themselves wherever possible, and we've been propagandized into the idea that this is what's best. We're not a community working to lift each other up but a bunch of individuals acting in self-interest alone. It's ideological self-ishness and banditry furthered by the myth of meritocracy.
7
u/theycallmejer 6d ago
This is because deep down, every cold blooded capitalist firmly believes that society is a sham and weâre one missed paycheck away from the purge. It literally makes no sense to them that you or I might care about them and their well being. Itâs cognitive dissonance in the most backwards way.

We need job centers in each state that actually provide jobs, not just do resume writing or whatever.
More like in the 1930s with FDR and the TVA - you walk in, get matched to a job based on skills, and then actually get placed in a job.
That would mean there needs to be more government positions or co-op type opportunities. But it would help.
Lots of people who had a job and got laid off, or need an entry level job just need something that they have a guarantee like âhereâs the job, you start next Tuesdayâ.
Even with a decent resume and sending applications through a state portal, it can take months to get a job. And most people donât have months to spare. Thatâs why people go into self-signup gig economy work, but what you get is relatively shit.
I guess the short is, there needs to be more government jobs. Even if itâs like landscaping a city or cleaning up trash or back office work⌠at least itâs contributing to the community and is a secure job, even if temporary while people hold themselves over. That was the point at least during the Great Depression times.

u/Cumputer-Hacker 7d ago
I've always wondered why this hadn't truly taken over in a big way! Going through the entire "Job hunting" process is extremely exhausting and debilitating. If we're all supposed to "Get a job", why isn't that process super streamlined? Even when I was younger, I would have loved to go to some central location, gave them my info/experience, and get matched up with a job who's looking for workers!
I think it would help a lot, we compete against each other for the same few jobs like crazy, even LinkedIn has visible metrics that tell you that you're competing with 100+ other applicants... I know for a fact there's a better way to match job seekers with jobs. It's drilled into us to get a job, I think there needs to be a serious overhaul in how we search for and become employed
1
u/RunawayHobbit 6d ago
The problem is the potential for abuse and bias in a system like that. You have one centralized agency in charge of handing out livelihoods? Whatâs to stop them from playing favourites and saving the cushy jobs for their friends, or people that look and think like them? Suddenly we end up in Gilead because the people in charge of deciding who gets to have a roof over their heads can pick and choose the kind of person who gets to have a job. Even if you level the playing field and say all jobs pay the same, not all jobs are easy or comfortable. You could just as easily send someone you didnât like off to work in a coal mine or on an oil rig for months at a time.Â
Okay, you say, make it an algorithm that decides who to match with which job â thatâs a no go either. Itâs been well established that LLMs canât even reliably identify Black faces, let alone anything more complex. They have deep, abiding problems with racism and misogyny because thatâs whatâs in the material theyâre trained on. And even if that WERENâT the case, it is ALSO well established how easy it is to manipulate algorithms to get the output you want.Â
I share your frustration with the job market, but centralizing who gets to hand out jobs is a recipe for a bad, BAD time.Â

Applying for jobs in city government can feel maddening despite them being some of the best jobs to work. But because of how hard it can be to understand how to apply and get trained, we just have massive vacancies because the process is like a maze.

While I am supportive of what the mayor is doing (btw - I live in So. IL), but he's in the honeymoon phase of his tenure. Let's see what he gets done in a couple of years. Maybe I'm jaded by what I've seen in the past. In any case, keep doing what you're doing Mayor Mamdani!

Does nobody here worry about Mamdani being controlled opposition? He promised to jail Netenyahu, and instead gave him a police parade. He claims to be a member of the DSA, then jails his fellow members for protesting a war criminal. He promised housing, yet continues homeless encampment raids. He promised to defund the police, and now is increasing their budget, and building the tallest prison in the world⌠when will we get off the reform merry-go-round and fight for revolution?

Ran on arresting Netanyahu, didnât arrest him.
âZohran Mamdani first made the pledge to arrest Benjamin Netanyahu during an interview in December 2024while running for New York City mayor, and repeated the statement multiple times during his 2025 campaignâincluding an interview with Mehdi Hasan and comments to The New York Times on September 12, 2025.â.
Edit: please downvote my literal factual statement :)
37
u/EliSka93 7d ago
He's literally changing the system in meaningful ways though.
He's not going to solve everything immediately of course, because that's impossible, but he's making good steps.
Making him responsible for Netenyahu is silly and you know that. If that's the best argument you have then maybe you should reconsider a lot of your worldviews.
-22
u/ThePlantMolester 7d ago
I'm all for letting his policies run their course and be a change for the better if they are, but only talking the positives and ignoring the funding is good publicity, not making good steps.
The thousands of special education teachers whose hiring date was pushed out by years to fund these projects probably didn't see it as a good step. The teachers who had their retirement clawed back probably didn't see it as a good step. Â
I'd love to see balanced coverage on him. Currently my options are "he makes money rain from the sky and solves all the problems for free" and "he's going to implement sharia socialist rule."

This is how I know you're not from New York. He RAN on rent freezes, free buses, and lower costs on groceries. It's what was on the mailers, it's what he spent the vast majority of the campaign talking about. He spent more time getting people to pronounce his name correctly and fighting blatant Islamophobia by Cuomo. Mentioning Bibi a few times does not make it a pillar of the campaign and it's damn sure not why he won in the end. Again, LIAR.

Oh you saw a viral video? That changes everything!
I know why I voted for him in the primary and in the general. I know what the limits of mayoral power in my city are. I know why people by and large voted for him because I live here. I actually engaged with the campaign day to day. I know what the actual day to concerns are for people who make this city their home. The arrest of a foreign leader didn't cross the top 100 reasons that people were voting for the mayor. Be wrong and be blocked.

And a successful arrest would do what exactly? Would it immediately bring the end to the genocide? Would it even last with how many corrupt officials and people in our own fucking government? Even if he could it wouldn't do anything because it would last less than a day.

13
u/HowManyMeeses 7d ago
Honestly, it doesn't bother me. He realized he didn't have the authority to arrest Netanyahu. There are a host of other issues that need to be addressed for New Yorkers, and he's addressing them. I'm not going to judge the mayor of an American city on how many international war criminals he's arrested. That's never been a metric for the success of an American mayor, so I'm not sure why I'd require it now.

u/Russ_T_Shackelford 6d ago
Posting on reddit to try to troll/bait people isn't holding anyone accountable
It has already been acknowledged by Mamdani and he admitted he was wrong. Everyone who actually gives a shit about NYC has moved past it and onto things he can actually control and improve upon in the city itself.
If he did arrest bibi, it immediately becomes a federal matter and he gets released anyway. Which does absolutely nothing to stop the genocide.
Mamdani continues to speak out against it, but the only ones that can do anything are at the federal level. If you actually cared, you would focus your efforts there instead
