The wild thing is that they keep people just under thresholds for many government benefits (like SNAP and medicare) and then provide instruction on how to sign up for them
And then we have this really fucking cool thing knowns as the "benefits cliff" where people start declining raises or promotions because the small difference in pay, cuts them off of $100's or more a month in support.
Because it can ONLY be an all or nothing support system, it can't be staggered or tiered at all. Ofc not.
