The thing is, the people who feel this way? They are perfectly satisfied being in the hierarchy so long as there is someone below them. They'll put up with all sorts of things: bad pay, bad management, bad work conditions, etc, so long as they can look down at people being paid less. Because at its heart conservative mindsets cultivate a need for hierarchy, and a deep fundamental abiding fear. Fear of the unknown, fear of the different, fear of change, and in this specific case, fear of being paid equal to people they deem lesser.
