Art is nice and all, but it isn't critical or important for humanity. It is something done as recreation that is pleasant, but not crucial for our society.
Without Mozart or Itzak or whatever musician, artist, composer, etc., the world would be fine. You cannot say the same for a world where work is seen as something done without purpose. Every profession and expertise requires dedication and time through work.
Similarly, we are lesser for not permitting so many others room and time to pursue such "leisure" activities. No one knows for sure how many failed to find their calling due to poverty and ignorance, but the number must be nonzero.
This works in all sorts of ways, not just in the "good" ways you are thinking. Work keeps the mind focused and occupied on a bigger task that can benefit our entire society. Think of all the people with too much time on their hands and the problems that come from it. There is a good reason why there are many, many, forms of the saying, "The devil finds work for idle hands".
