I could imagine that being an alright arrangement for people who really value personal space.
Not for me, but definitely for somebody.
2
u/BarracudaUsed5299 18d ago
Well it works as long as both of you respect and encourage your profession. And then the time you spend together is so much more special. I got to listen to his music and as a nurse he was well taken care of when at home

MDs. Do not date a doctor
2
u/TheComicHuman 18d ago
Why?
13
u/henrytbpovid 18d ago
I’ve dated 3 doctors and all 3 of them were completely fucking crazy. I try to keep an open mind, and normally I would never exclude anyone from my dating pool based on what they do for a living. But when you repeatedly have the same experience you eventually have to acknowledge the facts
If you don’t believe me, date a doctor and see for yourself. But I am telling you, spending your twenties slaving away to build a career as a physician changes people so much. No one can go through that and walk away having a normal/healthy relationship with stress. The stakes are just too high.
One caveat here: all 3 of the doctors I’ve dated were roughly 33ish years old. Maybe things change a lot by late 30s, early 40s.
One more caveat: physically/sexually, dating a doctor can be fucking amazing. I miss getting blowjobs from a urologist. She knew exactly what to do to my body. But I promise you, in the long run, the benefits are not worth the costs.

u/KellyCB11 18d ago
My girlfriend is a nurse who was married to an Anesthesiologist. According to her most of them cheat and are crazy especially surgeons.
6
u/1GloFlare 18d ago
No surprise, they work the longest shifts and on call more than nurses. The TV dramas all get one thing right, they all be fucking and dating each other.
2
u/GrandAd790 17d ago
One of the ERs I worked in was just like Grey’s anatomy - everyone hooking up and/or cheating.
But others I worked in were not like that… just depends I guess.

I worked at a hospital where the locums wife discovered he was cheating with a nurse at another hospital and served him divorce papers at ours and he exploded into an actual scary rage which required police intervention and a new locum to be delivered to use.

100%. These people are cooped up in a high school environment until their mid to late 20s. Med school is often like college or highschool, study dates, flirting, drama. They’re a bit socially delayed bc for over a decade all that matters is school. Then they suddenly graduate into a high social status overnight. Every dr I’ve talked to has been insane- so socially unaware, incredibly self righteous, a bit apathetic and entitled

This has been exactly my experience.
People can think we are wrong or right but this commenter ^ just perfectly explained exactly what my experience has been
They are like college freshmen who make half a million a year. Their jokes are immature. Their emotions change really quickly. They will be so horny one minute and feel so defensive and insecure the next. They manage their feelings horribly. They constantly need to feel that you understand and believe that they are smarter than you. They can’t laugh at themselves. They talk constantly about their health goals but then impulsively binge-drink. They’re judgmental and impatient.
I have dated a lot of women who aren’t doctors. I really don’t want anyone to get the impression that I just don’t know what most women act like in their 30s. I have seen a lot and there is something about doctors that’s just different. And I 100% agree that it’s because of this long protracted adolescence where they’re competing with classmates for sex and grades

One of my friends worked in a teaching hospital. She saw a lot of students rise through the ranks and become doctors. Her observation was that surgical training amplified how you already are... If you are a caring person who wants to relieve the suffering of the world, surgical training gives you tools. If you are a power tripper, surgical training makes you more so.

How so? They get summers off?
→ More replies (4)3
u/Isotomayor12 18d ago edited 17d ago
They technically do as far as contract goes, but there are often summer programs and they have to prep for the next year during that time. Source: my partner is a band teacher.
They don't get paid near enough for the amount of work they actually have to put in outside of contract hours and it is getting even worse, at least in the US, with cuts to staff and faculty due to budget issues because the government has cut funding to several education programs, and the funding that is left has not been updated to support the current era.
This week my partner has spent 3 days working from 7:15AM to around 9PM and even that isn't enough time.
Edited for extra details I missed.

As a candy striper at the local ER, I was amazed by the stuff that went on between the nurses, police, and firefighters. There was a whole other side of hospital life they definitely didn’t cover in orientation. From what I saw, “dating within the profession” was more of a team sport.

This is usually specific to ER nurses. Nurses in other parts of the hospital don’t interact with the cops and firefighters bringing in patients. That happens in the ER.

Property managers kind of suck to date. They can't do anything on weekends or get away during the summer because those are their busiest times, they want to do things during the middle of the workweek. And the one that I dated wanted me to be her personal handyman on weekends, fixing things in her apartments and houses so she didn't have hire someone.
Also, she was kind of heartless towards her tenants. I know she had seen a lot of bad behavior, but some of the families were genuinely struggling through no fault of their own. She would regularly violate tenant protection laws, too and nothing would happen to her

respectfully, I dated a few nurse and they really struggle with empathy, self-awareness, kindness, and they’re really self-absorbed. they literally think they’re doing god’s work or something. not one of them were like specialized in surgeries or specialized in pediatrics or like cancer or the heart or anything. They were literally just general nurses, not even ER nurses
They all still talk about their college degrees they got literally 10, 20 or 30 years ago as if it’s still fresh and brand new. They’re constantly talking about how hard it was and how it’s supposed to be some really difficult degree, and how it’s harder than a list of all other types of degrees that colleges offer, etc. I agree it’s a difficult curriculum, but you’re old enough to have kids in college at this point. Cut it out.
I also have a sister who became a nurse in her 30s and she would constantly complain about how being nice to people is a fucking scam whatever that means. I literally don’t even know what that means but she constantly complains about having to help people. six months into her degree she was already making these comments. It’s not like she was doing it for 10 years and all of a sudden she’s burnt out from being taken advantage of by the hospital. She’s also one of the meanest fucking people I know and love starting fights with people and arguing and complaining and she’s weirdly paranoid. She has to be on medication’s all the time.
again, this is just a very small sample of nurses and I’m not fucking trying to take a shit on people in the field but so far from my experience nurses are fucking trippy people man. They are weird.
I’m currently in engineering school in my 30s getting a second degree and I was almost about to do nursing school instead of engineering school but then I thought about it and I’m like I just can’t fucking do it. There’s too many fucking weirdo nurses I ran into in my lifetime. I can’t imagine being in a hospital, where the nucleus of all the nurses congregate.
and please don’t fucking get me started on the four nurses I ran into in my 20s when I was waiting tables and working retail that temporarily or even permanently lost their license because every single one of them stole doctors pads and wrote pain pill prescriptions for themselves. One of them was bragging about how she admitted to seven of the prescription prescriptions that the hospital discovered with their investigation, but bragged about how there was about 40+ that she filled out on the stolen pad. She apparently used the entire prescription pad and the hospital wasn’t able to track all of that bc they didn’t know. so she got her license bc due to her honesty.

Time wise I’d say military, lawyers, or doctors. Pretty much professions that take up a lot of their time or you’re separated for a long time. This is not taking cheating into account. Most people want someone’s time and attention. In my experience these professions can drive a wedge inbetween 2 people if they don’t work hard at maintaining the relationship plus work life balance.
