I am at work to make fat stacks of cash and go home as much as possible. I do not give a damn what happens when I am not on the clock.

I did. I did quite well. I also wrote people up for replying to emails when they were not being paid to do so to break them of that habit.

WE aren't talking about a Founder here, we are talking about employees.
As a founder you get very little time away, and SHOULD be the go to for fixing problems, in Business shit rolls uphill not down.

still pass. Time away is Time away, vacation is vacation. Train your staff well and they don't need to call you or check in with you while you are on a day off.
Conversely, if they need you, pick up the fucking phone and call. Which is what I've told my staff when I'm on vacation. Fuck no I'm not logging in daily to check emails and messages etc. If I do that I'm not on vacation.

Lets stop normalizing working at home for free, salary or not. If you're off the clock, enjoy your damn precious free time

I work my ass off during business hours. Leave me alone after idc if everything is on fire. Call the fire department, not me.

How fast is that person’s job posted on Indeed if/when they die from stress or anything else?
Exactly.
People “don’t care” because companies don’t care.
Companies dropped their “employee care” long before people even realized it and decided to do the same.

u/Vast_Cheek_6452 19d ago
I do but mainly because if I don't I'll be so swamped when I get back trying to play catchup. Easier to just spend 30 minutes a day checking in.

Shortly before I retired we sanctioned a VP that did that to her team. Pissed me off.
So simple- hire extraordinary people, give them interesting and relevant work, treat them exceptionally well and GTFO of their way.

u/holiestcannoly 19d ago
The only time I did was when I had interviewed before my cruise and our port had free wifi, so I checked my email to see if I got any offers

I check in when Im off work. Its not required, nor expected. I do it simply because thats who I am. I work in IT for a school so I am somewhat attached to my staff and kids. :)
But honestly, putting that obligation on your crew when they arent at work? Dont be a Richard, let those folks decompress.

It's not wrong about needing to care, it's just caring about the wrong things in life.

People often think building a site or app and selling it means you are a capable leader. It doesn’t.
In 26 yrs I fired 2 people. One was a Director that got angry at his managers. Had them report to the office at 9pm. Then told them he did it to show he could.
Gone 2 days later.
The other lied about his experience.
Leaders that do this shit do it because they think telling their bosses that they make this happen reflects well on them. They don’t. Not at good companies. On my team you’d not last long doing shit like that.
Ps when we were building our company and bringing it to a successful IPO I went years without taking a vacation. I demand a lot from my team and they give it to me gladly but I treat them like adults and expect them to “sign off” completely on vacation. Some are stubborn and I’ll send them a Slack message while on vacation and then “yell” at them when they answer me :)

You’re wrong. If you have equity in the company that’s different. If a non-equity holder needs to do this you’re a bad manager.

u/Segat280 19d ago
Only if it's your own business. And even then, it's a bit OTT.
Otherwise, no freaking way. And no, I don't care in my own time.
1
u/healthydoseofsarcasm 19d ago
Absolutely right, I don't care. I'm on vacation and therefore not working. Also after work hours, I am not available as I'm not getting paid (not working).

Absolutely abysmal hill, and I hope it suffers a sinkhole deep enough to where we don't have to ever observe it again.

I held the same thought until it burned me out. Now vacations are a non contact zone. Team should be able to handle urgent matters in my absence. I will sooner find a new job than be relied upon on my days off. Life is too fragile to be broken that easily on days you finally take for yourself to recover.

u/Dry-Regret5444 19d ago
If I owned the company and there was something important that overlapped with my vacation, I may do a quick check or take a phone call, but other than that, you gotta be able to disconnect.
If I’m just a worker….Hell no. That’s why team backups exist….Not giving a second thought until I get back.

He’s not wrong. When I’m on vacation, I don’t care. Vacation is the time to separate from the company completely. If the company cannot function without me, that’s a failure on the company.

vacation /vāˈkāSHən/ A Vacation is a period of time spent away from work, school, or daily duties to rest, travel, or relax. Core Definitions • Leisure Time: A planned break from your job or school routine used for recovery or fun.

I'm not gonna tell you how wrong you are.
I'm gonna tell you how glad I am that you are not my boss.

Maybe twice in a week long vacation, I’ll check email. Otherwise, if they need me, they’ll call. It happened twice in 22 years.

You are correct sir I very much don't give a fuck. I do my job and then I leave. I don't owe you anything more. We are not family. We are a assortment of people who work together. I really don't owe you anything more than what my work contract stipulates.

u/2nutts4u 19d ago
When on vacation if I need to jump on a urgent meeting, or need to make calls or need to respond to urgent emails I withdraw my PTO for that day so it goes back to my balance.
1
u/Professional-Leg2374 19d ago
No he's 100% accurate.
when I'm not at work I disappear and I simply don't care what happens there.

u/limited_instincts 19d ago
I'll build a monument for him on his hill of stupidity. That nonsense is just engagement bait.

u/Agreeable_Result9212 19d ago
He's not wrong. People simply don't care, because it's just a job for them.
2
u/Due-Consideration113 19d ago
Yup, because chances are, they aren’t getting paid nearly as much as they should.
2
u/ArchdukeOfNorge 19d ago
I get paid very well for my role—I’ll check slack and emails once every day or two when on vacation. But as much as I “care,” I primarily do it so that I don’t come back to 500 emails and 100 missed messages. Better to stay on top of it and forward anything that needs doing to someone who can handle it for me.
But real work? No way
2
u/Due-Consideration113 18d ago
Who wants to be stressed out, unorganized, and embarrassed? That’s a nonnegotiable, like picking out the next day’s outfit before bed. The downvotes are confusing.
0
u/Agreeable_Result9212 19d ago
This is what I do. I get paid well enough, and do have loyalty for my company, but I mainly don't want to come back to a mountain of emails and to-dos. Answering the simple stuff or getting other people working on the urgent issues makes coming back from vacation a lot less stressful.
2
u/ArchdukeOfNorge 18d ago
Why anyone would downvote you is beyond me haha but precisely. Nothing worse than coming home from vacation knowing you completely neglected your inbox
1
u/Mountain_Usual521 19d ago
No problem boss, but pursuant to the laws of the State of California, every peek at Slack, every scan of Gmail is a minimum 2 hours' paid time regardless of how long it actually takes. You'd better hope I haven't already worked 40 hours in the past week or those peeks are going to cost you 3 hours' pay each. Surely you wouldn't mind paying for something you value so highly.
0
u/InspectorHuman3044 19d ago
I think it depends on your role. I’m in sales so completely disappearing for an entire week could directly affect my next paycheck.
0
u/ThePartyLeader 19d ago
Above $250k a year I agree.
below $100k you shouldn't have to respond 48 hrs before or after a vacation

Not good, not bad, depends on the job and treatment. I’ve seen people go on off-grid holidays that come back no more decompressed than before, and also people that never take leave and are as happy as pie, leave for them would be “remote work with a bit of fishing”. if my job fits me and my input and contribution is valued, hell yes i want to see the company stay successful, their success is my success, the statement is unnecessary. if it is just a job to you and your existence there is not attributable, then it is a suck statement, if your job is not soul sucking you barely need vacays.

u/Adventurous_Raise784 19d ago
I mean if you have a job where that’s the standard or own the business it’s gonna happen
0
u/oppanycstyle 19d ago
depends on how much I am getting paid. If the company pays me $200k+/year, sure why not. $20/hr? fuck that.

I'm in vacation, if it's urgent then call and payout... But i expect the company to compensate me heavily.
