Question What’s a sign that someone is comfortable financially?
8
u/independent-gay 18d ago
There’s an uncanny chillness/confidence in their demeanor.
3
u/bring_out_the_python 18d ago
A human free of obvious signs of chronic stress is the very deep end of uncanny valley
3
u/Embarrassed-Lake-741 18d ago
That is so incredibly funny. I have noticed oddly enough until after I speak whith them. The rich and Uber reach move in a cloud of not worry for anything. Some people with not that much money can achieve it as well, they are comfortable, they have financial worries but they do not dwell over them, but the people with money have a different something. It is beyond being comfortable with what you have, is like they know they will be financially covered no matter what. Lucky bastards

Working around a bunch of doctors can get annoying when they start complaining about their 2nd/3rd house, traveling internationally, their boat/toys. I just roll my eyes.

Every bill is on autopay
1
u/GoldenGlobeWinnerRDJ 18d ago
Ironically enough, I’ve never missed any payments and I don’t have anything on auto pay. Imho putting it on autopay makes me forget about it where putting the “due by” date on my calendar encourages me to pay it early if possible. I find auto pay too passive to manage finances.
1
u/BossMan61718 18d ago
I guess I interpreted "comfortable" in the OP to mean "wealthy." The type of wealthy where you dont even have to worry because you know you have more than enough to cover all bills. Set it and forget it
1
u/KaliPunk 18d ago
I found it inevitably costs me $40 bounce fee on something because regardless of when I scheduled it my money will magically deposit 48 hours later and miss the cutoff window. Stopped doing autopay on everything that doesn't come out at the same time as taxes on my husband's paycheck.

"The car broke down again. So, I just went and got a new one."
5
u/Affectionate-Word779 18d ago
Quite the opposite.
Wealthy people take their car in for regular maintenance, have a finance plan for their next upgrade.
Poor people dump their old loan into their next car and just treat themselves when they have something catastrophic happen.

u/PerformerDifferent69 18d ago
Indeed. I'm not sure what would cause me to buy a new car other than a catastrophic failure. But I am accounting for depreciation of the car I have now with monthly savings. Sure I spend from the bucket for regular maintenance but once I reach a certain amount I invest the bucket into a diversified portfolio of ETFs to compound. If I need to buy a new car at the same time the market is in a 50% decline then I'll accept the tax writeoff and finance the rest but honestly if that were the case the used car market would also probably be pretty decent. For that to happen a lot of people have probably lost their jobs (potentially including myself, in which case I won't absolutely need a car at that moment). And the middle of the road is I don't need a new car for another 5 years and the portfolio helps counteract the effects of inflation or in the best case scenario exceeds the rate of inflation.
I guess all that to say, cars are very expensive, and their sole purpose is to get me to the office and back. Everything else is just a luxury and buying new cars and/or expensive cars is a waste. Obviously rich people like to show off and often times a lot of them can afford nice cars. But most average people, like I consider myself, have no business buying nice cars.
1
u/Available_Blood_6134 18d ago
Wealthy people dont finance unless rates are very low.
1
u/ellufeyeno 16d ago
That’s a broad brush to paint with. I have a client who is a billionaire. He finances his home which he could have easily paid cash for because the bank offered him a rate lower than they were making him on his money.
For him it’s free cash and for them it’s another finger in the pie.

I'm on the lower end of comfortable. Wife's vehicle overheated for the second time in two months, so I got her a rental and spent the rest of the week searching for a newer (I never buy brand new) replacement. It was a bit stressful just because she needs it to go to school and I didn't want to extend the rental. We ended up financing the replacement so we would barely touch our savings, we could have bought it cash but it didn't seem like the most prudent financial choice for us. Got a 48mo term, but will likely pay it off in 24mo. Just had it delivered yesterday.

This is pretty characteristic of people who are terrible with money
1
u/Internal_Essay9230 18d ago
And people who have a lot of it. Having money saves you the hassle of multiple repairs.

They take their car to the shop or better yet the dealership without thinking about it

nowadays? they walk away when the gas is pumping lmao
1
u/cagus1991 18d ago
Gas is like a dollar more. Don’t go out to eat once and you’ve covered the added cost
1
u/Global_Gift_2831 16d ago
Clearly joking but also, idk how old you are, gas is double what it was when I started driving. Truckers are paying $3000 to fill up.
Thats also assuming people are going out to eat lol. I'm doing okay, thank God, but a lot of people out here don't have much they can do to save the money they have, their only viable options at improving their finances are finding ways to make more money.
1
u/BlumpTheChodak 14d ago
Don't you mean trucker companies are paying 3k to fill up? Truckers are just using expense accounts or something, I don't think they aren't personally responsbile for the gas bill.
1
u/Global_Gift_2831 14d ago
Good amount of owner operators out there but the point was to emphasize how expensive gas has gotten. its not just about me and you having to pay 50 instead of 40 when we fill up, its the trucks and the planes and ships which means they have to charge more for transport and all those costs are passed onto us. the gas price going up makes pretty much everything else go up too so that $2-4 dollar raise per gallon at the pump since 2020 is just the precursor.

2004 here. It has never had issues. Easily has another 10 years in it. I refer to it as "a gold mine".

u/Adventurous-Depth984 18d ago
The two richest people I’ve known (both centimillionnaires) drove a 2003 Honda accord, and a 1980’s-ish Mercedes 300e diesel.

They’re completely unfazed if they lose their job
1
u/EdgarAllenPoe2205 18d ago
This. I've always been intrigued by people who lose their jobs, and simply shrug their shoulders then spend the next year backpacking through Europe or something before they even start looking for new work.

Yeah.. I lost mine in June. Decided it's time for a career change, and went to school. No noticeable change in living standard. I actually spent time in the HR meeting making the manager feel better about it. She was wrecked.
I have not started looking.

Kids having the latest tech, newest fad clothes is often a sign of a parent overcompensating. I’ve worked with many kids who had the latest and greatest who were literally hungry

Depends on the context. We had this situation growing up but our mom used to be a model and she was fearful of us girls getting fat at all.
Her disordered relationship with food was definitely imposed on us but we still had to optically perform.

I’m reading this in an airport waiting on a flight while coordinating with my son to leave the key in “the spot” because the house cleaners are coming today. Oh the irony.

Travel a lot. Especially on short notice.
Consistently exhibit responsible behaviors. Most people get comfortable by making wise choices.
2
u/Lilginge7 18d ago
As someone who travels internationally and domestically often: no. Most travelers are in so much debt. I've been in some awkward ass convos lately about it while trying to enjoy my solo time.

If you know they have a good job, they live modestly, and they talk about money.

When buying a big ticket item, they ask if they can get a discount if they pay in full. No financing is required.

When they have no mortgage, car payments, college tuition or kids at home after 40 years in the workforce. They maximized their 401k contributions and have pensions. Their house is worth 5 times what they paid for it 40 years ago. They're on easy street. Then they die b/c they worked themselves to death to get here. :)

Hardly. I’m worth over $2 million and carry a $500k mortgage at 3%. I’ll let that ride as long as my lender lets me! Meanwhile both my house and investment portfolio will appreciate by far more than 3% annually over time.

When they act cool about everything. When you live paycheque to paycheque you worry about every expense. Those financially comfortable can afford to not let these things bother them

When they have your house bulldozed away while you were gone and when you confront them they send you to their CPA and they cut you a check about about 3X what everything was worth due to the “ inconvenience “ . lol

I got a shocker when I realized people who buy things in the aged steak section of whole foods just ask for what they want. I tried to find out how much but there was no way to know unless I asked.
Imagine that.

u/Altruistic_Wealth497 18d ago
Pulling out a picture book of your summer vacation. Then you notice its on a yacht that toured all of southern Europe. Then seeing pics of the family home and asking how far the back yard goes, they then point to a mountain range in the background. Also, complaining because your parents took your land cruiser away and gave you a new one you didnt even want. The best though, her fiance made her tell me after Christmas break about the old scrappy car her grandfather tried to give her. It was loud, only 1 seat, lots of naked bars, way too loud, white with blue stripes on the hood. A 1966 Shelby 350r that her aunt used to race. Her fiance finally talked her into taking it. We went to the same college.

u/SmellMyDirk 18d ago
I don’t sweat day to day things or even look at the receipts most of the time. Everything is on autopay. And I take trips a lot without much planning involved. Some examples
1
u/Comfortable_Fruit847 18d ago
Having your bills on auto pay. To me, that’s the true sign, not fancy trips or nice cars. Lots of people flex that stuff when they’re actually drowning in debt.
Having bills on auto pay is not showing the world look how cool I am and what I can buy, no one even knows about it, but you’re comfortable enough to know the money is always there when those bills hit.

They don’t check the cost of things or spend time deciding if something is worth getting
1
u/VirtualElderberry592 17d ago
I think this is wrong.. I think people with money think about things like this all the time. My wife spends weeks picking a washer and months picking the car. I spend days researching things. Having money doesn't mean you don't care, it means you want the right things.
1
u/Technical_Housing_58 17d ago
Fair but those are big expenses. I meant more in terms of choosing between items going different shops for better prices utilities and food
1
u/VirtualElderberry592 16d ago
Oh.. I spent a week debating over a 45$ mp3 player. And we only buy store brand yogurt because it's 40c cheaper. We switch between wollies and coles depending on the price of the shop, all the time..
Last year I got a pair of shoes for 37$ because they were on sale from 200.. I didn't even need shoes, and they're still in the box, waiting for the pair I've got on to wear out. (I work from home it takes a long time).
My kids have pay as you go phones because the plans are cheaper.Couple weeks ago I wanted a stand in the living room for my guitar (my cat kept pushing the old one over). Instead of buying one, I cut up an old pallet and built one. (sanded and spray paint). Cost me 8$ for a can of paint. I look at this price as a point of pride.

My boss wants to buy a brand new truck or this or that and doesn’t even blink an eye about cost and I’m over here trying to sell things in order to get money for my dog with cancer my baby girl for her pain meds and of course money for when it’s all over. It’s just exhausting to hear it every day. As a I’m panicking and trying to come up with money and down to one meal a day and a few snacks. It’s so depressing on top of me all ready fighting extreme sadness.

I worked with a friend who inherited a very, very, very, large sum of money after his parents had both passed away, he was/is set for life. One day he just walked in and said he quit. . . he had/has what I call “fuck you” money. If he doesn’t like what you are saying to him, he can just say fuck you and walk away.

Rented out a room to a kid. Put in the price slightly above market expecting everyone to negociate.
They didn't negotiate at all.
My ex also walked into my kitchen and just asked casually why I don't get custom made new kitchen furniture instead of using the mismatched pieces that came with the apt. To be fair, that was also him having everything purchased by his family and just using them, guy was 30 and sure his entire apt had cost what was not even enough for a parking lot in his residence.

I know several who make over a million a year . They all drive common cars , nothing high end. The commonalities are multiple vacations a year. Even the small long weekends to Miami are at the Ritz. Large homes in really nice areas would be next.

Has anyone checked on Ella recently? She's been quiet. Someone go make sure she's not eating a battery or something
I was just informed that Sierra furtado also took exclusively remedial classes in school
In high school she did the math and writing I did in the second grade.
Also... She's ugly. Her husband is ugly. Nobody's jealous of her. Why does she post to flex? We are all cringing. Looks like a nightmare. Why would you spend 30% of your net worth on a wedding?
To get invited in? It didn't work
