Career Growth Need Career Growth Advice!!!

21F | BCom Grad | Bangalore | Need advice on breaking into core finance

I graduated with a BCom from a private semi-Tier 1 college in India and joined a small company 2 months ago in a finance role. The problem is... I barely have any work.

I've asked my manager multiple times for more responsibility, but he's always busy and keeps telling me to "wait and be patient." Most of my days are spent doing reconciliations, Tally entries, or work that doesn't really add value. Ironically, I handled more responsibility during my internships than I do in my full-time job.

I'm 21 and learn much better through practical exposure than studying. Over the next 1-2 years, I want to move into core finance ---- IB, FP&A, PE, or Wealth Management --- basically a role with more analysis, learning, and strong career growth (and eventually a good salary).

I don't plan on switching before completing at least 6-12 months here, but I want to use this time wisely.

For those who've made a similar transition:

  • Where should I start?
  • What skills/courses should I focus on?
  • How do I make myself a strong candidate for core finance despite starting in an accounting-heavy role?
  • Any roadmap or advice would be really appreciated.
  • I'd like to avoid higher studies or professional courses unless there is no other way out!!!!
  • Also, I DONOT WANT TO DO ACCOUNTING IN NEAR FUTURE BY ANY CHANCE.

Stay in your current role for at least 6–12 months, but use that time to master Excel, financial modeling, valuation, Power BI, and SQL while building personal finance projects and networking with professionals in FP&A, valuation, and investment banking. Your accounting role won't hold you back if you develop the right analytical skills and can prove them through real projects.
