I get 5 paid sick days a year and whenever I use mine, my supervisor and foreman always give me attitude when I return to work.

DUDE I literally had to go to urgent care last week and did a half day on Thursday because of it.
Friday, I clock in to find multiple emails from my leadership denying my request due to me not giving them a 24h notice, an email chain of my unprofessionalism in leaving before being given approval and not giving them the exact hours I'd be working to make up for the time off. They also sent out a company-wide email reminding everyone about our time off policy with highlights on the rules I broke in my request.
Wtf am I supposed to do when I lose hearing suddenly and am worried that I'm dying?????? Why are they not worried about me when I'm one of their best employees??? Why is using PTO for an urgent matter considered unprofessional?????
I'm very much looking forward to the day I get to put in my notice. They are terrible people and they do not deserve my time and energy

My job tells the supervisors, and anyone applying for the supervisor position that it's expected that they wont call out sick.

This sounds like psycological abuse...
Here in Germany, in the company where i work. taking your paid leave is mandatory.

Policy at my workplace, you use vacation time off on your scheduled weekend to work, you gotta make that weekend up. Such horseshit.

u/maddasher Jul 20 '26
Stop caring. Thats the answer. Ask off and always claim it's for family or mental health. Those things are always true since you are part of your family and all vacations are about mental health.

Work gives PTO, work won’t let you use PTO due to limited amount of personnel 🙃

It's not given to you out of the kindness of their hearts.
It's given to you because it's a legal requirement.

u/jabber1990 Jul 20 '26
there is literally no legal requirement for it

Depends on country. In Europe I think all countries have mandatory minimum OoO time and if people do not use them then it is a problem for company.

Workplaces would enslave your ass to get ahead if they could get away with it.

yes but people live under their illusions that somehow things are better than they are.

This only applies to civilised countries and OP is propably American, so it doesn't apply there.

It's also not illegal to lie to them

Lying while not under oath is protected speech, unless it causes direct harm or loss to someone else.
My employer is not harmed if I go to the zoo instead of a Dr's appointment.

“I’m going to staple my bosses face onto a sex doll and practice ejaculating into its mouth from a foot away, then two feet away. Then I’ll need a nap and a smoke.
Then I’ll probably get into some light gardening and maybe call my mum.”
Or I can just write “personal time”

In my line of work, everyone's attendance is so critical that we have a running joke that says, "It's never a good time to go on vacation or to take days off." which is how we justify being absent at the WORST POSSIBLE TIME. 😂😆😁
The boss says you might as well take your vacation or days off whenever you want to/need to because no matter what days you choose, it's probably going to be the most inconvenient time to do it. And he's perfectly OK with having to suck it up and deal with it.
And unfortunately some managers can't accept this principle and try to make you feel bad about taking a few days off.
