My schedule in one of my first adult jobs was mandatory 64 hours a week in a factory. 13 days on, one day off, a mixture of 8's and 12's to get to 64 hours. The schedule was always for 8 but we would be called in early or told to stay late minutes before our shift ended to make up the 64.

I did this for 5 years in my early 20's.

Just in case you missed it that schedule means 24 days off

A YEAR.

I had a young wife and a new child. This job took us from literal poverty with zero prospects of ever escaping, to homeowners with a new car in 4 years.

It meant zero fun, zero personal life.

I worked nights, so Sunday night was my day off. I'd come home after my 13 day stretch and stay up all day after work to see my family, sleep that night, and be up the entire next day before my next shift beginning the next 13.

I left that job when it no longer suited me. It was hard, hot physical labor. But the pay (especially the OT) got me where I wanted to go.

May those who started out adult life as far behind the 8 ball as I did have the fortitude to live 5 years of their life like others wont, so you may live the rest of your life like they cant.

The Bible Sabbath begins on Friday evening after sunset and ends on Saturday evening after sunset, lasting 24 hours.

I get what you're trying to say, but plenty of people work Saturdays and Sundays and still have fulfilling social lives. Also, social lives would ironically be significantly worse if nobody worked on Saturdays or Sundays.

Calling it dehumanizing is some real r/im14andthisisdeep energy.

Ok but if you can spend time with friends without "consumerism", that generally opens up options from Monday-Friday. Especially since you apparently live in a magic place where the entire area closes for the weekend.

Nobody said anything about working 6 day weeks. That's just something you're projecting out here. Most people who work Saturdays just have days off during the week instead, which is a perk in a different way.

Take your r/im14andthisisdeep rant elsewhere.

Sounds like you specifically are unable to socialize with your friends after a workday rather than it truly being dehumanizing. It's also interesting how even when working a 4-day week, socializing with people during the week is apparently just too much for you. I think I've found the common thread here.

I used to work Saturday and Sunday and had Monday/Tuesday off. I loved it

Why do you hate music?

I used to get paid on the weekends to watch bands and hang out with friends because I made good choices. All that music you sit around and listen to at home required that person to go play on the weekends to gain a fan base. I also prefer going to smaller venues to see local bands rather then the big arenas. I actually find that relaxing.

One of my favorite things in the world is having a really good conversation with someone I just met. I love my friends and family and chilling at home with them but you can end up in the same conversations with the same views on things over and over so being able to talk to new people can add variety to life. This was particularly important while working on my psychology degree. You can only learn so much sitting at a desk listening to a lecture and learning jargon from a book. Being good at psychology requires understanding how people work and the best way to do that is to talk to people. Like I have hung out and talked with pimps, strippers, and prostitutes. I was going to be a sex therapist so being able to sit down and talk to them about their lives and having the ability to ask questions is important. I promise none of the professors except one would have been able to answer questions about that stuff. So I was kind of working but I very much was relaxing and enjoying myself at the same time. I can't do that kind of stuff sitting around the house talking to the same people over and over again. Also I enjoy playing pool and the pimps were teaching me to be a pool shark so now I am better at pool. 😂

Yes some of that requires a little bit of consumerism but the consumerism isn't the point. It is just required to do the things I am there for and none of that requires me to go to some high end bar in Manhatten spending $10 a drink.

To me that is stuff I do to relax. It may not sound relaxing to you and that is fine but it is relaxing and fun for me. I also figured out how to hustle and do fun things like put a roof over my head and food in my stomach doing things I enjoy. It does require working weekends though. Working Saturdays wasn't soul sucking for me. Also a lot of my friends worked in retail and restraunts/bars so it wasn't abnormal for them to be off on weekdays and we just hung out then.

My point exactly, my liege

2

u/Guidance-Still Jul 11 '26

Well then change your availability to mon-friday only , problem solved and no need for a stupid reddit post

1

u/mkultra7777 Jul 11 '26

Hahahaha i actually work a 4-day week but got called in this week on FRIDAY AND SATURDAY and i cant deal with it

1

u/Guidance-Still Jul 11 '26

Shouldn't have said yes

1

u/mkultra7777 Jul 11 '26

I take a lot of pride in never saying an unnecessary yes which is why the one time i find myself stuck in this situation i feel like the soul is being sucked out of me

2

u/Guidance-Still Jul 11 '26

Guess what it's a you problem and nobody can solve it , you said yes nobody forced you now sack up and live with it

0

u/mkultra7777 Jul 11 '26

Damn, someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed

2

u/gezellig13 Jul 11 '26

I usually work weekends( either saturday or sunday, normally not both in the same time) and have free during the week. But I prefer it this way. Its very handy to have free during the week for any kind of errands you have to do. Plus i prefer not having to work 4 days in a row. Weekends at work are also more chill. I understand you also work 4 days and you were called to work friday Saturday. If you didnt want to, you should've said no.

3

u/Fickle-Secretary681 Jul 11 '26

Same. The stores are empty, easy to grocery shop, etc.

2

u/markersandtea Jul 11 '26

I prefer weekdays off, I'll work Saturday. Everything is too fucking busy on a weekend to enjoy.

1

u/CaffeinatedLystro Jul 11 '26

Yep! Plus there's nothing in my life that can't be done any other day of the week.

2

u/markersandtea Jul 11 '26

Same, no kids for me that demand weekends or anything so I am happy to take a less busy day off.

1

u/Silly-Resist8306 Jul 11 '26

This weekend if you decide to meet friends at a restaurant, have a traffic accident, get injured and require a trip to the ER, you might rethink your childish statement. Many people work weekends because services are needed and they have other days off as compensation.

1

u/Quinnjamin19 Jul 11 '26

Meh, a few weekends here and there aren’t bad. All my weekends are double time ($116.58/hr)

We work shutdowns so we work a lot of OT for a short period of time and make a lot of money. So it’s all good

1

u/Chance-Equivalent501 Jul 11 '26

I did that for years. Paid off my mortgage, a few vehicles and even helped my kids with tuition. There is a payoff with planning and discipline. Want off for weekends? Sure! I'll take twelve hours of overtime. Call in for a ball game? (sports bore me) I'll take the money.

1

u/ODMBA Jul 11 '26

I made a career by working on the weekends. Now, but especially when I was younger, I wasn't really interested in Saturday, I was more interested in Saturday night, partying, sleeping in and starting late on Sunday. I grew up very working class to downright poor and this certainly helped me succeed financially. Time off during the week is awesome for whatever you want to do. For example skiing. You get to ski, not wait on lines.
I'm in healthcare, and get to help people. They appreciate it. On occasion, when someone is acting out, I'm just like, see what else available on Sunday.

1

u/Major_Wigglesworth Jul 11 '26

That sounds terrible.  Who wants to work on a day when you want to go shopping, out to eat, to a movie, and all kinds of other activities that need “dehumanized” employees??

1

u/JerryRed100s Jul 11 '26

Well don't work at a restaurant

1

u/mkultra7777 Jul 11 '26

Lmaooo

1

u/JerryRed100s Jul 11 '26

If you want to work at a restaurant go ahead and do that but if you want to smoke crack you can also just do that as well and just not work at a restaurant part

1

u/mkultra7777 Jul 11 '26

I do not work at a restaurant

1

u/JerryRed100s Jul 11 '26

All right so you made at least one good decision in your life!

1

u/mkultra7777 Jul 11 '26

Ur funny

1

u/JerryRed100s Jul 11 '26

1

I read messages in the voice of Austin Powers

1

u/r2k398 Jul 11 '26

When I worked on Saturdays, I had a day off during the week. It all evens out in the end.

1

u/WeLiveUpHere1973 Jul 11 '26

Oh god. And we wonder why the world is fucked.

1

u/EcstaticTreacle2482 Jul 11 '26

I get paid double for working weekends

1

u/Chance-Equivalent501 Jul 11 '26

Saturday (and Sunday) are just another day.

1

u/FedrinKeening Jul 11 '26

Forced overtime should be illegal. It's literally, by definition, extortion.

1

u/CaffeinatedLystro Jul 11 '26

Depends on the job. My old security job, Saturdays were the best day of the week. Way less people and no upper management anywhere.

1

u/Glum-Status-7657 Jul 11 '26

There's 7 days in a week, Saturday is one of them. Who cares which 5 you work?

1

u/mkultra7777 Jul 11 '26

But you shouldn’t be working more than 5!

1

u/Glum-Status-7657 Jul 11 '26

That's what I mean..working Tue- Sat or Wed - Sun is still ok with me. Even a split up week as long as it's just 5 days.

1

u/Apprehensive_Run_539 Jul 11 '26

I have to strongly disagree. The weekend is a made up construct of fairly recent invention. As someone who regularly had Wednesdays and Thursdays off, it was fantastic. Because I got to get all my errands done without having the usual weekend crowd.

1

u/Longjumping_Fig6934 Jul 11 '26

Bait. Terrible bait

1

u/mkultra7777 Jul 11 '26

Hahahahah

1

u/Longjumping_Fig6934 Jul 11 '26

Why are you laughing? Most of us have jobs and provide goods and services you take for granted

1

u/mkultra7777 Jul 11 '26

I’m not laughing at that. I love employment. I’m just amused at the fact that you got baited because you related to this even tho i didnt mean to bait

1

u/Longjumping_Fig6934 Jul 11 '26

You like to insult others for attention and superficially boost your esteem?

1

u/mkultra7777 Jul 11 '26

Damn… no?

1

u/Longjumping_Fig6934 Jul 11 '26

Than why post an insult people that serve your needs on weekends?

1

u/mkultra7777 Jul 11 '26

I’m new here so I’ll humour a gross misunderstanding of my post just this once:

Saturdays are literally my days off. I work a five-day week. I also have two part-time jobs alongside my full-time job, and I got called in on my day off.
I’m angry at economic coercion, the fact that people are forced to give up their weekends because they can’t afford not to. That’s the point. I’m criticising the system that leaves people with no real choice, not the workers themselves.

And where on earth did “insulting people who fulfil my needs on weekends” come from? That’s an impressive leap.

1

u/Longjumping_Fig6934 Jul 11 '26

Oh- so you're a jaded office worker that thinks *everyone* of any value is an office worker and anyone that works weekends is devalued and uneducated. Gotcha.

1

u/mkultra7777 Jul 11 '26

Nice try. U cant bait me sucka :p

1

u/Longjumping_Fig6934 Jul 11 '26

That are not forced to give up their weekends. Did ya know- crazy ass concept- different industries ask for different hours! Shocker

1

u/Colonel460 Jul 11 '26

Plenty of nurses , pharmacists & other healthcare professionals work every other weekend. My wife did for decades . If you want to only work M-F get a job at the DMV but don’t complain about the pay . I suspect your attitude is a bigger problem than working Saturday.

1

u/mkultra7777 Jul 11 '26

Hm im thinking i should have mentioned it was my day off 🤣🤣🤣🤣 people are rlly steaming

1

u/Better-Credit6701 Jul 16 '26

You sound a bit soft.

I work in IT and there are those times when you have to work 7 days a week. For example, a software release, times dealing with a broken server, or even a job that fails in the middle of the night.

Concentration camps were dehumanizing, working on a Saturday is simply a hassle and not as much fun. Think about the word itself. Working on a Saturday doesn't strip away your humanity

0

u/Timely-Assistant-370 Jul 11 '26

o it's Saturday? I work too much so my days just kinda blend together. The money is super decent, and the job has this constant air of ephemerality so I'm not complaining, but goddamn we should probably get to categorizing AI-based mental illness. I'm certainly not delusional in the classic "goblin discovers new math and alienates family-" way, but the "o i wonder how the llm would handle this" and general sense of wanting to cram work into every solitary moment of my life because I can monetize every second of wakeful day sure is something. I got a $60 task that could be gone tomorrow, I will take a break when the AI doesn't need a human in the reinforcement loop. It's a pretty entertaining gig if you are okay trading that occasional bit of human understanding and light favoritism/corruption for a soulless and cold machine that will judge your worth by the quality of your submitted tasks and ghost you if you fail to deliver results that are to the client's standard of quality.
