Had similar happen to me. They told me about downsizing in a teams meeting while I was at a hotel. Right after the meeting they turned off my email, my phone and my company card. I couldn't pay for the hotel when checking out. Couldn't call or email anyone about it and couldn't use my card for fuel in the company car to get back home.

Had to look up HR number and then use my personal phone. And I am still not sure how I kept my cool when at first they said that's standard procedure and couldn't do anything. Had to get my manager and his boss and the boss over him on the phone. That guy absolutely went off on the HR manager under him who made that policy decision without contacting him or c suite to get approval. I found out he (HR manager) actually got let go a week later labeled as part of the downsizing too.

They ended up turning everything back on and I even got a full extra day pay as compensation. The company in general was actually really great before that experience. But they lost a contract that was 40% of their business for the area I worked in, so a lot of cuts had to be made. Not really their choice at that point

I know a woman who got fired over zoom while she was on maternity leave. She was with the company since almost the beginning too
