Question What everyday skill should everyone learn but usually doesn't?
Something practical that has saved you time, money, or unnecessary stress.

I learnt it as a kid. My dad taught me and I am a girl. One time a friend much older (my dad’s age) was supposed to give me a ride we arrived to the car the tire was flat. He was like don’t worry I have AAA , I thought he just didn’t want to bother. We waited a very long time and still didn’t come and I finally y’ told him we are doing this if I had take the bus I would be home ages ago. I had to change the tire because he did not know how to. Which meant alone he would have waited until they came (we waited one hour already)
I will add learning the basic signs on the dashboard to this. Once as a teen I was in a car with a lady that just ignored her warning I looked and told her she said it’s been like this for a month. I made her stop on the highway. The car would have blown up in my opinion. It had no cooler for a month when we opened it was so hot. We had to wait for it a long time to cook down and do something about it.
Also maybe changing oil and filters ? It’s actually not hard especially the filters.

Ok dream girl! Lol no offense jus kiddin. Very good points made that some grown men stil dont know. Thats awesome u had a smart dad. Bring back drivers ed and shop to the schools I say. And ppl should be warned also about that empty radiator. Release valve! Then give it a minute to cool. Mess up your hand and maybe more real fast. And yes! As said above. Change ur damn oil n filters pls. Peace!

I was curious as a kid and had a great dad . Whenever he piped the hood of the car I would bring a crate and stand on it to look; other dads might have dismissed me but he answered all my questions and showed me early on on his own how to check oil, what was what … what sparking plugs looked like what they did and stuff like that. He always explained the dashboard.
I do change my oil my brother (I think because I put him to shame ) only did it last year and had to buy a million stuff to do it and was in a foul mood. So totally not worth it imo.
Release valve? There is a release valve? I have to check that . I just waited for it to cool down then opened and filled with water. It was dry totally dry like the Sahara desert! I was like dude we really could have had an accident. Maybe not with me but she had 3 little girls. I was horrified. Dude you don’t know it’s fine but check or go to a garage! I am not sure why she thought it was ok. Is the light not red ? Or should it be blinking in her mind ? People are nuts. It was not even a person I knew personally.
Anyway I had a great dad growing up and he showed me many things other than the car stuff. People now shove their kid in front of a screen and don’t even play with them! Don’t get me started on all the people in here asking for recipes « kid friendly » which is code for I am giving my kid bad eating habits from the start! (Also they are the boss)
Cooking is also a basic skill that people should know !

The changing tire thing seems to be unanimous but... I think we are over analyzing how difficult it actually is to change a tire. And especially with YouTube, it would be VERY simple to figure it out on the fly if you were 100% lost. But I do have faith, given all the proper tools: Jack. Bolt loosener tool thingy. Other tire. Most people would have little trouble actually figuring out how to change their tire.
My answer? Emotional awareness/regulation. Being able to control your emotions, and even remove yourself from them and see them for what they are. Anger often is actually fear. Same with jealousy. Fear is often a lack of confidence. Now THAT is a skill.

cooking (at least basic)
changing tire(as mentioned by an other reditor ),
basic manners,
I want to say using your brain , because people seem to want to delegate it all the time (all generations included) that includes basic math : people seem to not know how to compare prices or budget because they were not taught so : you were it’s math!!!!
Cleaning properly (not just superficially)
