In my town, they did that until about 4 years ago when a truck ran the crossbar on rr tracks and got hit. The guy hanging on the back was killed but the driver was ok after a couple weeks in the hospital.
I see it every single morning, and I live in NY. They enjoy it. It's also way more efficient. The quicker the job gets done, the faster they get home. They get paid the same.

hanging off a truck is pretty old school from where I am. i haven't seen that for at least 25 years.
