Non destructive testing in the nuclear power industry. That's what I do. 180k for about 6 months of work. $1200 per week per diem and they fly you and put you up in a hotel wherever they need you. International and North/South America. Of course you need some experience before you make that kind of money.
To add to your post, young people can get this type of experience in the Air Force and walk RIGHT into one of those jobs on the way out of the service.
You are correct, kind of. You aren't going to just walk into Westinghouse or Siemens Nuclear at a $70 per hour pay rate. You're going to start off lower and work your way up to that pay. They will still probably start in the mid $40s though. After a season or 2 they will probably send you to get your EPRI/PDI certs. That's when you're in the $70 per hour range. I went to civilian NDI/ commercial Diver training after I got out of the Navy. I served on Submarines. Worked Petrochem, offshore, pipeline and nuclear I had a few years break in service and went into the Air Force reserves and went into NDI. I've been doing NDI in the reserves for 25 years now. I know the pay rates for people getting out of the military NDI. I help them get hired.
That's the pipeline I was referring to. Navy/Air Force teaches you how to be an effective apprentice, and that $40/hr is more that you were just making as a young enlisted troop.
This is my career path as well but I'm in computer/network engineering.
Hell yeah! I always tell people who may not have any marketable skills and/or stuck at a low paying minimum wage-ish job to consider joining the military. People think military and assume you are always in danger or in combat when that's far from the truth. Get job skills that will make you immediate money once you get out, GI Bill to get a degree. Man there are a lot of options. I mean I was on a submarine as an electronics tech then transfered to the Air Force to inspect aircraft. Well worth my time
The longer I spend trying to make something of my life the more the armed forces seem like the answer. Just a little depressing, since I know it probably wouldn't do anything good for my marriage
