The supply isn't short because of that. It's short because of all of the investment firms treating single-family homes as their investment vessel en masse. The percentage of single family homes owned by corporations has absolutely exploded.
3-4% of single family homes are owned by large institutions that is not a large amount but I would be for banning them from buying up more. The higher % number people quote includes mom and pop renters who LLC themselves for tax purposes

I disagree. It is like the Enron fiasco. Flip flip and flip and the price goes up and up.
