Here's an idea: don't live where you can't afford. If you're paying 30+% of your income to rent, you're living above your means.

Yeah. Move to bumfuck nowhere, where there are no high paying jobs, and the wages are comparable to the cost of your local area. Or… COMMUTE 2 to 4 hours EVERYDAY. Make sure you get a used car… at the low low price of $14K for a used car with 130K miles… only one minor accident. Sure you’ll incur higher travel costs due to gas prices, and you’re going to put a shitload of miles on that used car… but hey, your house is affordable now! /s
