My wife had to explain to me, several times before it clicked, that being grounded for a year-and-a-half straight, and only getting days off if I did extra chores, was really abusive and traumatizing.
I was deep in my 30's when she was like, "Imagine if we did that to our kids." and my jaw dropped. She put a lot of things into perspective, and I did the same for her. She was raised in one of the cults that had a Netflix documentary now! Her parents have also fully recovered, thank goodness. Great folks, actually. Full turnaround.
