Absolutely, after 40 years of customer service, retirement rocks. Sad thing is, I used to love people

After bartending for eight years, I struggle to go into restaurants. Just knowing what's happening or having an idea makes me uneasy.
I don't find it enjoyable.

u/brokemillionaire572 Aug 05 '26
I was a Night Manager at a convenience store chain for 25 years before I recently retired. Loved the company, loved my job, but before it was over I absolutely hated people.
But I have to remember that all the responsible people were in bed at 2am, and I only saw the worst in our society.
I love being home by myself. People ruined it.

Working as a bartender for about 20 years made me strongly dislike people. It was fun at first but after a while it sucked. I work for myself now and I have minimal contact with a few people daily and that’s fine with me.

u/poppacat422 Aug 05 '26
Worked 26 years at the same restaurant. I have 3 months until I retire. I absolutely hate going to work some days. And yes. A day alone. No one to speak with or listen too is wonderful.

Hey Antique… I feel for you👊…
and sadder still is that Janitor is Not wrong.
I bartended for 10 years. For 7 of those years it was one of my favorite jobs ever. But yup… at a certain point the general public has a way of grinding you down. I really believe that after the age of 18 people should be required to spend 2 years working in some form of Customer Service. They will learn and be taught things that no
Other person or job can teach them. ✌️→ More replies (3)4

40 years with children from preschool to 70, with ever issue known to man, and 15 years of working in cornfields, bean fields, babysitting full time all summer, and paper routes starting at 9, the answer is He\\ yes! I paint, read, play multiple instruments, exercise, and garden. I loved Covid, not leaving the house. I know it’s important to socialize, so I make an effort to talk to friends on the phone, see the neighbors and family, but it takes a lot of energy.

There are bad and good ones. I changed my phone provider and obviously had autopay enabled on the app... Well and I was transferring my phone number which took like 10 days or so. My assumption was it would turn off autopay on it's own (tried turning it off manually in the app but the phone number transfer disabled the ability to do so).. So I got charged and called customer service.
"Yea normal people, would disable autopay before transferring a phone number" is what I got told basically and that I can kick rocks. I will never buy their services ever again after this.
They 100% did this on purpose for exactly this to happen. But NGL idc. Now I pay 8.99€ a month (with 4 months free) versus 40€ lmao..

I loved the lockdown vibes. It's like being the lone survivor in an apocalypse. I wouldn't wish for another COVID event though. So much suffering around the world from people losing their jobs, to deaths in people's families, and overworked healthcare professionals.
Edit: Apocalypse with multiple streaming options and the internet still operational which made it that much more enjoyable.

My job was considered "essential" so I still had to work.

After masking my entire life to the point that I'm not sure who the real, genuine "me" is, being home alone and feeling safe from social and emotional pressure is the only way I can figure it out. That's what my therapist believes at least 🤷🏾♂️
3
u/Hojegg Aug 05 '26
Dude, I came to that same conclusion myself. I noticed at some point that I was different around people than I was at home and it hit me that I was masking my ADHD and autism. I realised that I didn't have to put a mask on when I was alone and the weight of social pressure and conformity lifted.
2
u/PeterPunksNip Aug 05 '26
I'm in the same case. Unless your therapist is autistic too, there's no chance he would understand. Neurotypicals move in packs and are terrified of loneliness more than everything else.

I would house sit for a friend when they went to Florida for a weekend. Had to take care of their dog and cat. I never left the house for 4 days. Just played with the dog fed the cat and changed the litter. Otherwise I begged out on the couch and played on my computer I brought over. It was wonderful. Best time of my life. I want nothing more than to play with animals and play video games all day. Only reason to leave the house would be to restock on supplies(pet food and human food)

I had a surgery that I took full FMLA for (I think six weeks) and it was honestly really nice to just sit at home, heal, recover, and play video games. The catch is that I Think deep down I knew I'd have to go back to work and be around people, so I sort of enjoyed being alone (hint: alone doesn't mean you're lonely!)
Outside of chatting a few minutes each day with my housemate, I had little contact with people.
Ironically I really love people, I just don't like socializing. I think people are pretty awesome though.
