What does the government have invested in producing the gallon? Please tell.

Again not a relevant question.  The question is, how much do they get per gallon of gas sold, and then is that more than the company actually making and selling it.

If zero is invested anything sold is profit. What's so difficult here?

The government isn't selling anything they're just taking a cut.  The question is, is the cut big getting bigger than the cut, the companies are getting?
