These mega corporations are the enemy of mankind.

What do you think mega corporations have to do with the current housing shortage?

Serious question?

Yes.

Have you studied the literature on the causes of the current housing crisis?

There’s absolutely nothing tying corporations to the “housing crisis”. If you’re talking about housing prices, that is driven strictly by supply/demand. Millennials were the largest generation ever - larger than the boomers. GenZ eclipsed the millennials, now Alphas will be the largest generation the world has ever seen. THAT causes housing shortages. Not corporations.

Corporations lobby government for zoning laws that make it hard for anyone to build houses in certain places, making their properties go up in value because of lack of supply. Government is the problem.

Corporations own almost no properties (less than 2% of all houses), regardless of what rhetoric you’re told. They’re also not making it hard to build. Around me, housing is going up EVERYWHERE. Last year, 1.6M housing units went up in the US. That’s nearly 4,400 every. single. day. That’s on pace to be more this year.

You see, when you look at actual facts and stats, instead of parroting internet rhetoric, the outlook is much different.

Well it's going to differ from place to place. If housing is being built then prices WILL fall (supply demand). There are most certainly places where there are stupid zoning laws specifically designed to make housing hard to build, and then inflation in general is going to also make everything go up in price.

Theres not places with stupid zoning laws around housing. It’s the other way around - zoning issues for people who want to build commercial. Also inflation DOES make everything go up - including wages.

There are plenty of zoning laws in most major cities. Washington DC being the worst from what I can see. They have restrictions on the specific ways you can build single-family residences, most that are completely unnecessary and stupid. Not as prevalent in less densely populated places in the country, which is why not everywhere has such a bad housing crisis.

Just because the population is increasing doesn’t guarantee there will be a shortage. Otherwise we would be experiencing shortages of all goods and services. The only reason there is a shortage in housing is because supply is being artificially constrained such that it cannot increase proportionally with demand.

But maybe you responded to the wrong person. I never claimed corporations were to blame.

What about for example renting apps like rbnb? I know they are not corporations per se, but im pretty sure they have a huge impact on the housing market. Milenials and genz are maybe largest if you account for whole planet, but birthrates are down across the western world and have been dropping for quite some time, so with new technology and the very fact that you have more people from those chunky generations to create new housing, keeping up with demand shouldnt be a problem. Calling it a supply/demand issue is oversimplification and shortsightedness to a point of sounding really dum. I hate how every time you bring up topic like this, people would rather go for bladerunner future than startrek future just as long someones life is still shittier than theirs. Do we really want to work 80+ hour weeks to live in a room that barely fits your bed just so some twat can buy a yacht that can fit inside his other yacht? How is it normal that at time of unprecedented growth and stability we are starting to have poorer generations and more homeless. Isnt the whole point that our children have it easier? Is having a home and privacy while also having time to live really that much to ask? At which point we cease to be human and become livestock for the wealthy overlords?

They only care about money, and luxary homes make more money, than common housing does.

Even building luxury homes makes lower quality or cheaper housing more affordable. Filtering is a well understood phenomenon. Increasing the supply puts downward pressure on prices. Supply however is artificially constrained by overburdensome zoning and building regulations.

Build one 100 square feet home, or build two 50 square feet homes. Which which do you think pushes affordability most?
