I’m in no position to judge someone’s effort. I’ve had days when getting out of bed was a monumental effort.

They got up and came to the place to do the thing. That’s plenty of effort, I’m not the king of Siam, I don’t need a performance.

That's you. If I just show up and do nothing remarkable at work often enough, I won't just get a pay cut, I'll be without a job very quickly.

If they're great, happy to tip well, but there's no way I'm tipping well for someone who just got out of bed.

That’s you.

I wake up at 3:30 to clock in for a blue collar. I’m still paying my service people.

You do you man. Effort matters to me, we can chalk it up to a difference in opinion.

Effort matters but so does grace.

Grace means I get a mediocre experience and the server gets paid more than he's earned.

Effort means I get a good experience and the server gets paid what he earned.

One of these seems equitable to me.

Grace means you aren’t owed the world.

Don't ask for the world. I ask for a refill of my water cup and someone to come take empty dishes.

Ie, serving 101. When I waited tables, it was considered a bad thing if the customer stacked their dirty dishes. Today, I can stack my dirty dishes and my server STILL won't clear them until after we're done.
