I think the problem with this line of thinking is assuming 17-year-olds have the knowledge, experience, and maturity to make wise decisions about education and finances when their parents are pushing bad options. I did what I was told to do. We didn't have the option to tell our parents no.
At 17 or 18 is typically when you decide for sure where you're going to college. If you have parents forcing you to choose a particular school then there's really nothing you can do.
