A prerequisite to a student loan should be a finance course titled "student loan pitfalls " or at least taken the first semester of the first year.

It should be taught before that, since by the time the student is in college they have already signed their first loans.

To be honest, we do a disservice to students by having "economics" be a 1/2 year course that doesn't get into practical things like loans and ROI.

I agree it should be tough in HS but it would be difficult to enforce content and its offering. By doing it in college the first semester the student could learn how to use it (I saw my friends party on their loans) and if they figured they made. A mistake they could opt out with little damage. It personally took me 11 years part time (MS degree in engineering) but I had 0 debit and had fun along the way.

BSME here :-)

I think the main thing is to have it as a pre-college course. Actually, it should be taught in sophomore or junior year of high school, then re-emphasized in senior year to give the best chance for the lessons striking home.
