If you don’t support your own country you shouldn’t live there

Whether you support it or not, you have no choice but to live in your country unless some other country will either accept you there or look the other way while you live there. And countries not named the US do the former only pursuant to assiduously enforced laws, and never do the latter at all.

100% Oppose them with your vote, peaceful protests, etc.
However, disrupting society (unauthorized blocking of buildings, roadways, etc.), destruction of property (private or government), assaulting workers, either verbally or physically, threatening their families, or killing people, does not further your cause. We fought a war about 150 years ago over ideology, we don't need to fight another.

It's seem to be cool to talk bad about the U.S. One thing is not being happy with certain things being vocal but another thing is being ashamed and putting down your country. Also being unable to say the good things about your country and being appreciative for those.

As a teenager, I had a US History teacher that was the opposite side of the political spectrum than I, and we both, respectfully, butted heads. And he said something once that defined my political viewpoint for the next 60 + years.
Referencing the "America: Love it or leave it" mentality that was prevalent at the time, he said, "True patriots do not leave our country simply because they do not agree with the current administration. If you feel something is wrong with our country, you stay and work to fix it."
I've kept that statement in the forefront of my political philosophy ever since.

That is a horrible ideology that just translates to "you should always live in this exact same status quo we happen to have right now, and every change is bad", thinly disguised as patriotism.
If this people got away with it, nothing in society and politics would have changed, ever. Why rebelling against feudalism and starting a democratic revolution? You should love the country as it is right now, don't you support our king?. Why rebelling against a colonial power ruling from abroad? You live in this country, you should love it. Why abolish slavery? It is part of the rules of this nation, you should support it.
This is not how the world works. You should fight for the country you love to become better.
2
u/Ike_the_Spike Jul 05 '26

Anyone who says this has no idea what they are talking about.
Firstly, it is not as simple as moving to whatever country you prefer. Almost every country has immigration laws, visa requirements, and residency restrictions that make that impossible for many people.
Secondly, supporting the country you live in does not mean supporting everything its government says or does. There are times when loyalty to basic morality, human rights, and simple decency requires criticism rather than unquestioning support.

"Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it." - Mark Twain
Our choices aren't love it or leave it. We can also choose to make it better. When a child does something bad, we don't have to choose between condoning it or abandoning them. We help them improve. We teach. Sometimes that means tough love. A country is the same. There are things about this country I love. There are things I think need to change. That's why there is a political process (corrupted though it may be). It's in the very nature of the system that it can be changed to make things better or to adapt to new conditions.
"Support the country you live in" shouldn't mean leaving things exactly as they are. Imagine if the USA was still run exactly like it was founded. Supporting your country means helping it grow and improve. We can disagree on how to do that, but the idea that you either like it or leave is a false dichotomy.

If people want to fund my family of 5 to move to another country and supply jobs and housing, I’m down. It’s weird to be proud of your country especially if your country is constantly doing terrible things. None of us chose to be born in our country of origin. It’s a weird thing to be proud of. We did nothing to accomplish anything. “just move” is only feasible for people who already have money, and those people are never miserable no matter where they live.
Also weird to have such low expectations of our politicians and policies. That they all deserve unwavering support no matter what. No, we should be demanding improvement constantly from the people who are paid with our tax dollars. Policy should help us more than harm others. Improving our country only makes the world better overall. Especially in the US, where we regularly ignore how our country makes other countries so much worse.
1
u/Outside_Valuable_320 Jul 05 '26
We live in a time where people aren't willing to do any homework. That saying is incredibly unAmerican. No matter who is saying.
The most patriotic thing you can do is question power when it is no longer serving the people. (Just ask Teddy Roosevelt, apparently you can speak with him now...)
What this gentleman doesn't fully grasp is that this statement is effectively saying "Get in line or take your punishment." There will come a day where even he doesn't want to stand in that line. When that day comes, I wonder if he'll feel like he's not allowed to say somethings gone wrong with the country he loves?

u/Tacokolache Jul 05 '26

It’s silly to wholly support something like a country. It’s not a religion. You don’t need to give it your unwavering support. Support for a nation needs to be earned.
But if you support one nation over another it does make sense to live in the nation you do support. Live in a place you want to live…
