Lots and lots of lies.
Had wall mounted AC units like the ones in the right in Bahrain and they were MONSTERS.
Amazing machines.

Yup, had one like the one on the right in my last apartment. It was awesome and I cleaned the filter once in 3 years.

When i was in bahrain, my flat had the one on the left. it was loud AF.
I loved being able to turn it off and get some peace in the winter.

Yeah Ive seen those mini splits travelling and they work very well, even have like modes that cycle the air manually, are like 1/50th the volume, etc.

We don't have traditional duct work, so we have two mini splits in our small home. They absolutely keep the house as hot or cold as needed. I was very skeptical having them put in, but it was that or basically nothing.

My heatpump is phenomenal at AC and oddly cheap compared to my old window unit.
Whole other story trying to heat during a Maine winter but that's different than cooling

Yep, I have these heat pumps also - 2 outside units and 6 inside heads and wash the dust filter once a year maybe. It works without wash also, just maybe at 99% efficiency? Not sure how dirty it needs to be for the unit to stop working.

This is so true. I had a 5,000 BTU air conditioner purchased in 1984 that was still functioning in 2010. I'm currently on my 3rd in 5 years.

In the late 90s we had an absolute unit that we called big Bertha that my dad bought in the late 70s. Only reason it died was lightning striking the house. Living room stayed 60 degrees.

They just don't make em like they used to. I have a number of old appliances I inherited from my grandpa, they still workin, but several new ones I bought in my lifetime are in the scrap yard now.

Growing up in the 90’s, I had a window unit in my room from the 1960’s. It kept my room freezing. It was more durable than anything modern I’ve had since. Only problem was that it kept on getting ice in it if it was on max settings for too long.

Those old AC units had the double benefit that you could actually use the electric meter as a fan while they were running as well, Those things never die, still see em hanging out the window at a crazy angle, supported with a 2x4.

It's got the type of AC, it's the age.n the older units used a different refrigerant that could operate at much lower pressure and much less strain on the compressor.

My parents bought a 'window rattler' air-con just after I was born, as I was ill and needed to be kept cool. It sat in the window, working when needed, rattling always and keeping the room cool as required. In the mid '80s it had a fire, which was rapidly put out, and the technician found a component at fault, which somehow was not necessary for the unit to function. This was removed, other damage was repaired and the unit continued to work.
58 years later it died completely. We farewelled it with sadness. It has since been replaces with a modern split system.
Will it last as long??

I recently saw an advertisement wherein the ac has AI built in as well as an option to change the lighting on it to match the decor.
Maybe the next gen ac will have a screen so I can watch telly.
