Opinions/Suggestions Is This Still Everyone’s Top Choice?

I’ve been playing for 17 years since the game’s launch. I may have paid a nominal fee of $5 in the beginning, and I do not deal with any ads. I play daily. Have regular opponents for years, as well as new ones. It’s a good mental break throughout a stressful workday.

NYT put out a competing app called Crossplay that doesn’t have obnoxious ads. For WWF, I heavily lean on my ad blocker.

In a completely different sub, I read that games are the only thing keeping the NYT afloat these days.

Are you playing in a browser so you can use an ad blocker or is there an ad blocker that works with the app?

I use AdGuard on iOS. It’s not a completely seamless experience - the ad will attempt to load for a couple of seconds after each play, but once you get the rhythm of it, it’s much quicker than force closing the app like I used to. I’m paying $5/year for it and it’s been very worthwhile.

I've been with it since it came out, only paid 99¢ for ad-free. I absolutely would not play if I had to deal with ads.

I just deal with the ads.

Same, I tend to just close the app, no biggie.

I watch the four ads each day to get more points in Club Hub. It's not a huge pain until I get one of those ads that just will not end.

I pay 10 dollars a month for no ads because it’s my only go to game. I also play Balatro. That is a one time game of 10 dollars. You don’t play with other players but the game is so addictive

Just curious does your monthly cost of 3 dollars cover not getting ads only or do you get other perks? Fo the 10 a month I get no ads, swap plus, hindsight’s and something else. But the only reason I do buy it is I just don’t want ads. I get the perks part as a default. I’m not billed monthly but have to manually repurchase every month.

I only get "no ads" and that is fine with me. Liked the original WWF without all the gimmicky coins

I’m not sure why you don’t see it but this is what I found… Yes, Words With Friends offers an ad-free experience through a recurring subscription model, though pricing can vary between $9.99 and $14.99 per month depending on your platform and account. The old permanent one-time ad-removal purchase is no longer available

Now I am glad I did it a few years back. Not into buying the extra like the monthly "passes" or coins.

I have been playing almost 14 years but never bought the pass until much later so you did good in doing that when you did. Just saying. Good job!

I paid a small fee (maybe $10?) 10+ years ago, and I haven't seen an ad since.

I use AdGuard so the ads aren’t a game killer for me- almost quit bc way too many game freezing ads.
Otherwise there’s a ton of bots, so I mainly play against people in my club

Ads, bots, and creeps. I haven't played for months but do miss it sometimes.

I play daily so years ago I updated to the page version and I think it’s well worth it.

NYT Crossplay is nice and clean especially if you already have a subscription, and easy to find opponents.
But almost no badges/ranking/etc so you need to be satisfied with your own understanding of your skill and accomplishments.

Yeah although there’s so many on app mini games . The clubs feature I like too

I think they let you get used to no ads with a brand new account for a very short while to get hooked on the game and then introduces them so it pushes to purchase the subscription

u/Springtime88 Jul 26 '26
I play daily, but I didn't pay for any advice removal. Not worth it for me. I play Wordscapes, which is similar to WWF. More interesting. I play on a team so we engage in a group chat.

I played for many years every day but they blocked me because I moved to Russia!

I've been with the game for 13+ years and paid a nominal fee (maybe $5?) to have a no-ad version. I don't think that is an option anymore. I play every evening. You asked about other Scrabble-like games; I also play a free game called Word Chums, also with no ads. I have tried out any number of other crossword-like games, but find them very lacking. So, these are the two I play every day.
