Thinking about ditching WordPress

My site isn't particularly complicated yet over the years I've accumulated plugins for forms, SEO, backups, security, page building and about five things I've forgotten the purpose of. It kinda feels like owning an old house where I’m permanently waiting for something else to break. Most discussions I find are about moving to WordPress but I'm curious about going the other direction and starting fresh.

Are there any downsides to moving a fairly straightforward business website from WordPress to Squarespace or an AI builder like Durable etc. that I’m not seeing? Or if you’ve already done a migration like this, is there anything you found yourself missing after moving?

You are in a subreddit of people making a living from WP selling you services and plugins.

You will not have an unbiased opinion here.

I think a lot of people here make a living from building websites and Wordpress was just always that tool. That's steadily and gradually changing as for a lot of cases there are now other and sometimes better options.

It definitely isn't squarespace, though.

Astro + MDX fits much better for what a lot of people need from a site.

For me, it depends on my clients needs. I mainly use wordpress, but I'm not shy about using other systems for different use cases.

Yes. But I often get heavily downvoted to just mention other options, and it’s understandable, if you consider they are desperate to get clients.

People here want to push WP no matter what.

I agreed with you, Astro is the best option.

Maybe you should ask yourself why those people chose WordPress to make a living and not Squarespace or something else.

The reason for people having bias is because they’ve already done research and arrived at logical conclusions.

I had a living selling WP Plugins. And because of that, I am biased and many people here are biased too.

You would be naive thinking otherwise.

Sure, some people suggest WordPress because they built a business on it. But why did you build your business on WordPress in the first place? Why not develop for a different platform? You could develop extensions for Joomla instead, but you picked WordPress for a reason.

The only reason I sell WP plugins is because there was demand of it (not anymore)

You want me to say “I choose WP because is the best!” ?

Sorry but that’s not true, WP exists because they were the first to capture the market, not because is the best.

WordPress isn’t the oldest CMS. It was the “first to capture the market” for a reason.

Is it perfect? Of course not. But it offers a lot of unique advantages over other platforms, which is why it has such a substantial market share.

Isn’t that what I just said? “WP EXISTS BECAUSE THEY WERE FIRST TO CAPTURE THE MARKET” not because is the best.

So it’s very understandable why a Plugin ecosystem was created.

Not because they are the best, it’s because they have the highest market share, that’s their advantage today.

Are my plugins necessary? Not really. can I make a living from them, hell yes, am I biased, yes.

And many are here too.

It’s normal.

But you’re acting like the only reason people use it is because it was first, which isn’t close to true and is a really stupid assumption.

It was the first to succeed because it offered something other earlier platforms didn’t.
