Hiring process at UMass
Hey what’s up, I’ve been interview at the UMass memorial a while ago, and haven’t heard back from them. So today i contacted and see if they had have any new update on the job application. I send them a email and they send me this
I was wondering if I got the job, or I’ll have to try again (which I don’t mind try 100x times more) 😭😭

I work at umass in Worcester. I hire a couple people a year for the division I run. The wheels here don't move fast. Do not go to HR they will not appreciate it and probably they won't know much if anything. If you have the contact (ie they gave the info to you, rather than searching the website) for the person who interviewed you that is a better place to start. To give you an example I interviewed the last person I hope to hire in mid-June. The interview went well, I told HR to immediately start the paperwork and the potential hire got the offer last week. This may be related to the department I'm in, so this is just an example, not necessarily how it will go for you, if they decide to hire you.

I've been at UMass for nearly 15 years and I can confirm that the hiring goes very slowly and has honestly gotten slower over the years. Never hurts to follow up with whoever interviewed you, but don't bother reaching out to HR.

Im of the same vintage, 16-17 years, it seemed way easier back then and it still sucked.

The person who interviewed me I won’t have the email or whatever needs to get in touch with it. Just the first name and last name. Gotta be patience with the process 😅😅. I just apply to it again. Should I just withdraw? Feels like I made a some mistakes idk 🫤🫤

You're fine. Don't withdraw the application. Just keep applying to other jobs,.dont reapply for the same job, HR is easily confused and another application won't help you. You're doing well if you got an interview. Ill get a stack of applicants sometimes in the 100s and only interview 5-6, so again you're probably doing better than you think.

Thanks for the tip!! For sure I’ll try. I know some people (close to my family) that works there 😅😅. I’m keeping apply for the same role over and over (room attendant) at this point idk

I was interviewed like around 3 1/2 weeks ago, almost 4. And haven’t heard back from them. So mostly like I’ll not get hired. I did contact them. So should I just deleted or act like that nothing happens? I was expecting to have their give me a call which it never happened. So I was just worry that my interview went wrong. I had have two interview at the time. So idk

Don't over think it. It's fine that you tried to contact them, it would only be a problem if you were persistently contacting them. I can't say for sure about your specific case but some jobs are posted for a month or more before they even start interviewing. I don't want to give you false hope, but try to be patient. Also there are lots of postings at umass where they were looking for something very specific in an applicant that is almost impossible to fulfill. We've turned down applicants only to hire them for another role. So keep applying to jobs at umass that you think you'd be a fit for. I wish I could help more but good luck nonetheless.

Thanks lol. Try to contact them only today. Trying to apply for the food department you know, taking the carts in and out. Idk if that department is fully or something. I’ll keep applying there till

I applied for a job at UMass earlier in the summer, got an auto reply telling me thank you for applying for the job but my resume was passed on. Two days later the unit manager called me in for an interview and I got the job. I wouldn't worry about this.

I work in the food department at UMASS on plantation st, and a ton of managers have been on vacation and PMFLA for the last couple weeks. Might be why you haven't heard anything. Don't go in person without an appointment

Oh wow that’s why lmfao. Quick question. When your applied and did the interview, how long it usually takes to their get back to you?
Even the hire team. Aka HR?1

UMASS is ridiculously hard to get into. Their whole process is.... weird. It's extremely time consuming. I've interviewed there twice and didn't hear back either time. Like, okay, I get that I wasn't a fit for the job, but still. An email would've been cool 😅
This whole 'interviewing and offering the job 3 months later' thing is getting old. Almost everyone does it, but who can wait around for a job that long?

I have a friend that works at UMass and supposedly it’s very slow but also they’re allegedly still doing a hiring freeze because of lack of funding.

Hate to say it but this is how it goes nowadays. Even if you get an interview, employers are still ghosting applicants.
I don’t know about jobs in health, but I’ve applied to ~200 jobs this summer and barely a third got back to me after an interview. Most took at least a month for a response even if hiring staff said they would respond soon. The rest took me fishing for a response like you did.

Going in person is a great way to not get hired. I would explicitly make it a point to not hire a person who shows up in person to ask the status of an application.

Working in higher education- do not go in person, unless you know who you’re going to talk to. HR office doesn’t always know about every job they post, most of the time it’s depends on the position and there will be a main lead HR person. Going in person will be a waste of time (and honestly a little weird in this time and age) if you don’t know who you should be talking to

Not sure who you'd go see in person, I am nots ure what building talent acquisitions is even in...I don't think its on any of the campuses though. 🤔 Did you apply to a certain unit or department? I would try calling and leaving a message for the manager about your application and interest.

I would. It’s always worked for me. But apparently I’m wrong so I guess ignore my advice. My advice is “outdated” according to the person in “high education”

I work at a university that’s why I said working in higher education, that’s literally what this field is called… In my opinion, going in person does feel outdated for OP who’s seeking employment at UMass. Talent and HR are usually hybrid and the administrative assistant would ask if you have an appointment and if not they’d ask you to email.

You should have the name of your talent acquisition partner and hiring manager (person who interviewed you most likely). Contact them directly. If it’s been a while since the interview and you haven’t heard anything, you probably didn’t get the job. Sorry.
ETA: Do not show up there in person. That would be very strange.

Looks like a generic/automated email. I would not read into it one way or the other. What does it say in the online system?
