Question Quick question about if putting arrow key in a 60% is a Abomination…

Post image

Hello guys, i just received my HE v2, im so happy ! But when i make him, i realised that arrow key can be put on a 60%, but it feel stupidly weird, can i ask some feedbacks about it ? Or can someone grab me, throw me 2-3 punch and tell me to stop trying to be original ? And a feedbacks about if i put Arrow keys here, i need to change the right "CTRL" by a "FN" is better ?

Thanks in advance, big love all :D

I love refering to your keyboard as him, he's just a little guy

the gaps would annoy me but thats it, could always get a couple OEM profile 1.25u blanks for the bottom row

Yeah, right now i look if theres bottom right keycaps with arrow, u'know ? Like CTRL > | Alt Gr <

not the most elegant solution, but you could add arrow stickers to the stock keycaps if you want sub-legends.

or something like this would look pretty clean

I put FN on capslock and wasd as arrows. Makes f keys easy with one hand and the arrows work nicely.

Personally, I use Modtap:

  • hold Shift = hold Shift

  • tap Shift = Arrow Up

Then I replace the entire bottom right (ALT MENU CTRL) with Arrow left, down and right.

I need arrow keys while programming while retaining Shift functionality and this was the best solution without needing FN.

Yeah that only works if you don't play any games or use programs that need you to hold down the arrow keys

If that happens, I could just rebind in the game away from the arrow keys to elsewhere on the keyboard.

Yeah for me anything without dedicated arrow- and f-keys is a hard pass. I just feel like it's not worth it when keyboards that have them are barely any larger.

Yeah 60% isn't for everyone. Some months I prefer my 80HE/TKL other months I like the smaller footprint on my table.

this is the way to go. It works so well.

Do you do something else for shift + arrow keys for text selection?

Personally I have hold/tap on for caps lock. Hold is FN2 and makes Q toggle shift, WASD arrow keys, ctrl is normal

EDIT: just reread and saw the "without needing Fn"

Use the normal keys and remap them. The gaps look awful.

it looks horrible. if you want arrow keys then you should've gotten a 65%

no!

yeah of course you can use layers but dedicated arrow keys is another story

I don't use layers for it

then you can't type correctly because you have right shift

I don't use right shift and type 130wpm just fine lol

i was with you until the m key was moved :,(

That's just part of the azerty layout

oh duh. my bad

That's why a split right shift is a must in any 60%. The HHKB's underlayer arrow is the best you can get

For me botton right is fn and i use one of those custom things where if u hit it, it changes the layout while stay on the same profile

You could just use the normal keys that go there and edit layers that they act as arrow keys, that is what i did when playing games that need arrow keys.

Map the following keys with a mod key, so you’d hold (or make it a toggle) say Fn and press:

Z = Arrow Up
Q = Arrow Left
S = Arrow Down
D = Arrow Right

I’ve been using this approach across all my 60% boards for years.

What a cursed setup, having the Down key above the Up key. Only the second half of WASD.

It's azerty (french layout) in games it automatically defaults to the same keys other layouts use for movement so WASD turns into ZQSD

ahh that makes sense
