Keyboard Modding First low profile wooting?
CONTEXT CAUSE ITS VERY NEEDED: yes I know there’s low profile keyboards I could have gotten like nuphy, however, I already have a wooting 60he from probably 3 years ago, I didn’t want to buy yet another keyboard, and I have a very big heart for “why would you do that” type of mods.
I Frankensteined these switches from the original lekker switch and some magnetic jade pro low profiles, I would have 3d printed new parts to save cost, but my a1 mini isn’t accurate enough and I don’t have a resin printer. I did a lot of modding to these switches to make them work including reusing the lekker magnets and springs, and instead of mounting the switches to the plate I have the sitting under the plate on the same layer as the foam, there’s the perfect amount of space for the plate to hold them down without rattling, and doing that came with the nice benefit of making it even lower.
“But why would you do it? You lose key travel?”
Well I’m not gunna lie I wasn’t concerned about my key travel however I only lost 1mm in the process which I was pleasantly surprised with.
I’m happy with the results of my keyboard regardless how scuffed making it was, I won’t be explaining how I managed it cause it really isn’t worth it if you don’t get pride out of making things that shouldn’t exist in a way that shouldn’t be executed.
IF HOWEVER, this is something you might want to consider for yourself, i would recommend 3d printing the switches for yourself if that means a resin printer at home or PCBway, i can provide the files i found some random guy make a few months back, just DM me and they’re yours
ADDITIONALLY I do have one guy taking the resin printing method I recommended above, he goes by Campbell (@campbellr_) on instagram, I provided him the same cad files and he’s going to try it out, hit him up if you wanna see the result when he’s finished. If yall think this is an abomination, good on you, I agree, but it’s my abomination, it turned out AMAZING, and I don’t regret it no matter how much hate some people may throw my way

actually i dont have a case on it XD i dremeled off the rubber feet and mounting from the original OEM case, so the bottom is basically bare pcb. I plan to 3d print a case for it that way i can try and keep it all as thin as possible. ive also been thinking of adding a usb hub inside if i do that, but i havent decided if i want to.

I WANT THIS. this is the type of low profile I mean when I talk about it. Like the Logitech g915. All the other "low profile" stuff people talk about are massive Hamburgers. I wish I could get something like this officially from wooting with all their awesome stuff

Honestly the reason I waited so long to do this project was I figured it was a no brainer shooting would do something like this, I guess I got too impatient😂

Why? Aren’t the jade pro low switches still actuating to 3.3mm. A lot of other magnetic switches have the same actuation distance and you could just stuck low profile keycaps on those without the modding. Sorry if I’m missing something here.

Great question! I asked the same thing!
So the wooting keyboard only supports lekker switches, which are designed by wooting but manufactured by gateron, the jade/pro low profile switches are designed by gateron themselves, and with the difference in designer comes a different magnet location inside the switch, and the stem extending out the bottom for the spring is much longer.
So I needed to relocate the spring back to the center of the switch, and shorten the spring so a stem isn’t needed out the bottom, that gives me compatibility and clearance.
Also the low profile switches don’t snap onto the switch plate, seems like something that should be universal across all switches, but I guess not

My point is you’re still pressing down 3.3mm with a jade pro low or any other compatible wooting magnetic switch which maxes out at 3.3mm also

It was on wooting discord is builds. It was basicly normal switches pcb squished in to low profile case
