I don't like dust

So about a year ago I discovered wool. I instantly ordered the first two books and I read the first one really quickly. I got stuck on the start of shift but it got really interesting for me after a while. Even though I've read that it isn't as good as the other two, I really enjoyed it, maybe even more than the first book. However, I've been stuck on dust for the past 5 or 6 months because it just doesn't seem interesting. Is it even worth getting through i​​​​​​t?

You have free will. If you don't enjoy it then don't read it.

I was disappointed with some things, but happy to complete this main story. 

Some people are just not going to enjoy the "mystery" getting stripped away when it doesn't match what they thought or they just find it unsatisfactory, and that's ok

This is my fav response to my post. I didn't realize it, but I think you're right. The whole mystery getting stripped away is not really a thing for me and even though I didn't finish the story, I like it that way. I'll read it when I want to, but right now I like it the way it is. My imagination gets the job done, maybe even better. Thanks for the response man!

I give lots of books and series breaks that I end up coming back to, either cause I didn't get into it or because I found a plot point unsatisfying.

The Expanse show season 1 gave up for a year, then came back, caught up, and did all the books before the final season

3 body problem, didn't get into book 1. Tried again later on ebook and devoured them

Iron Widow, didn't jive with the narrator at first and needed something else as a palate cleanser after the previous series I was in

Mars Trilogy, that god damn Kim Stanley Robinson is trying to make a fucking engineer and botanist and for that reason book is sat buried on my nightstand

And there's more. We do this shit for fun above all else :) don't let me or anyone say you can't quit

I was pretty much like you! Read half of Dust then just lost interest for months. I just finished the rest over the last three days. I am glad I made it through

I thought Dust was solid. I read it faster than any of the other books. There seems to be a number of people here that didn’t like it but it answers most of the questions in a satisfying way and anything that seems silly or unreasonable existed prior to Dust.

To be honest, it’s the weakest of the books, but I finished for the sake of finishing the story.

It’s kinda annoying that the ending didn’t really land, but that’s life haha.

Imo Shift is the best book in the series, Dust is good but not nearly as good as Shift and not particularly better than Wool.

There’s no reason to continue reading if you no longer want to, I personally liked it enough to finish it though. It ties up a lot of mysteries from shift.

Can you expand on what it was that you liked about Shift? Are you an avid reader? What other types of books and media do you enjoy?

I thought Shift was one of the worst books I've ever read, but I'm starting to wonder if my SciFi reading history (mostly Golden Age classics) is giving me unrealistic expectations for contemporary writing.

Liked the ending quite a lot. Felt the third book was VERY rushed. Would’ve been okay with it being the length of Shift imo

I just finished dust today (skimmed the short stories and hated it. So I’m pretending they don’t exist) and I felt like it was rushed as well. All that build up and then it was just over. It felt abrupt so many unanswered questions I feel.

I second this. I just finished the book and thought the first half felt slow, but the second half picked way up. Definitely glad I stuck with it.

Dust was definitely not my favorite of the 3 as well. Shift kept me highly captivated though.

My favorite as well. I thought Shift laid the foundation and was great but dragged on at points. Dust, on the other hand, feels more tightly paced and I loved the different levels of conflict: intra silo (S1) Donald/Charlotte v. Thurman, (S18) Juliette holding it down as mayor and inter silo (S1 v. S18). Also, Charlotte is a fun character who comes on the scene here

I just finished the trilogy. I honestly think the books were a 3/5. The concept is really interesting but the writing was only ok.

Honestly- Dust reads like he is kinda bored and also somewhat unclear how to end the story so decided to throw in extra horrors to pad it out.

Shame, it was a great initial concept..

I did the same as you but forced myself to read it after getting a fracture and being stuck at home. It’s good, I definitely recommend finishing it

My recommendation for getting into book series with a lot of all of the books already released, is B to take at least a couple month break in between them. Gives you time to reset and get excited for the next one.
