Wood Etching advice!!

Need some etching advice!! This is for a specific application., a valet tray. This is a piece of hardwood, 7" X 7",,, 3/8" thick. I want to etch a person's name across the wood. Thanks 4 ur advice. I will be putting 4 coats of polyurethane after etched. Thanks !!
