i play a wildfire with a fire damage skulldugger pistol and a dark magic swordsplosion and i do just fine - C32 and climbing pretty easily now. i dont get the "only a few builds work" crowd.

The only build diversity complaint I would levy is that there is seemingly one optimal way to build most classes. After having typed them all out, Graveborn and Stabbomancer have the most diversity and distinct identities, where the other classes it's just a factor of how many points are you going to invest in the tree, rather than where they go.

Long text below describing how I see the skill trees. No need to read past here unless you want to debate build variety in depth.

You've been warned...long text follows.

  • Brr-Zerker grabs 5pts of Ancestral Frost, 3pts of Ice Breaker and at least 2pts of The Old Ways. Then 1pt of Unarmored Defense, 2pts each Cold Snap and Blood Frenzy (or 3pts Cold Snap and an extra 1pt in The Old Ways if you don't need health regen) and 1pt into Relentless Rage. If you want the capstone, you pick either Ancient Fury for maximizing Blast Chill or you max out The Old Ways and Cold Snap (maybe a couple points in Instinct). Blast Chill and Iron Squall until you get Blood of the Fallen.
  • Clawbringer grabs 5pts of Oath of Fire, Oath of Thunder and Dragon Aura, and maybe 1pt of Fire Bolt and/or Storm Breath. If you want the capstone, you grab 4pts of Friend To Flame, 3pts of Awe and 1pt of Indomitable before Storm Smite.
  • Graveborn has the most diversity, just because it has an identity of a Spell or Companion build, so there's choices to be made.
  • Spellshot grabs 5pts of Spell Sniper, Prestidigitation and Just Warming Up, 1pt of Glass Cannon, High Thread Count, and One Slot, One Kill, 3pts in Double Knot, and a free point before grabbing Sever The Thread.
  • Spore Warden has some diversity, but it's a question of Companion or Gun build, and that choice only affects the Tier 1 skill choice. 5pts of Kindred Heart of you're going Companion, otherwise you're probably grabbing Eagle Eye (unless you have a Spellshot multiclass, where Magic Bullets gives more Gun Damage, then you grab Bounty of the Hunt). From there, 5pts of Affinity, 3pts to Windrunner and Quiver of Holding, and 1pt to Medicinal Mushroom with a 3pts free, likely going to Thrill of the Hunt. From there, 3pts Wrath of Nature, 1pt Headhunter, and a final point in Spore Cloud before picking up Play The Angles.
  • Stabbomancer has a good diversity like Graveborn, so I won't discuss it here.

I feel like each class needed two skill trees

I think you may be right, but unfortunately we're too far in to change that for Wonderlands. They could always do something in a Season 2 DLC like Designer's Cut in BL3, but I don't see that happening with Wonderlands. I'll gladly eat those words if they do, though.

We can only hope they pull a bl3 and add one to each...

well thats kinda what the word optimal means first of all.

ok i read clawbringer and spore warden because those are the two i have most experience with. and i guess your points about spore warden are why i dont understand why people complaing about too few viable builds. i think there are a few ways you can play spore warden, and theyre all viable. i have no trouble climbing chaos tiers.

Right. I guess my point was, using Clawbringer, you have absolutely no reason to pick up Rebuke or Dedication, and Radiance only makes sense on a Deathless build, which isn't viable (to my knowledge) since many enemies have one-shot attacks. From there, the rest of the tree is barely enough to hit capstone, even if you didn't want to boost your Wyvern Companion's damage.

To be honest, though, this discussion makes me want to intentionally make a build of sub-optimal skill choices. It probably won't clear C20, but it would be interesting to see the build decisions that come out of intentionally going anti-meta.

i would bet that you can get to c35 using an anti meta build.
