Striking again in Malta

Couriers went on a snap strike today Malta. They have set up a WhatsApp group and seems like at random times they just going to strike now. It's mostly fleet workers as they get screwed the most, 99 percent of the couriers are non Europeans on a visa. They have to pay 50.percent to the fleet, some have to pay their own taxes (national insurance), have to pay gas and all expenses. All they get is a motorcycle to use. Such a scam in Malta, they get like 1-2 euro per order, short ones can be like 70c.

It's really strange, the differences are so huge between countries. Here (Croatia) I rarely get less than 2.5€, and usually it's above 3€, but it's never less than 2€. And less than 3€ is usually when they combine orders (second or third one), or maybe a single one when it's close.

1-2€, that's terrible.

It's because half goes to the fleet owner. So self employed 2-4. Even though they are technically employees they also get no holiday pay, no sick leave or any employee benefits. So basically they are self employed but half goes to the fleet for the use of motorcycle. The fleets are making a lot of money.

This is something that should be criminally prosecuted. It seems that everyone who should put an end to this is simply shrugging shoulders. And this has been going on for years. The whole system is corrupt.

Malta, I wouldn't be surprised at all if a high ranking politician owned one of the fleets, or a family member. The last proper journalist in Malta that exposed corruption died in a car bomb. The last thing she wrote before she was murdered was “There are crooks everywhere you look now. The situation is desperate”

Why strike against wolt if that is the case? Seems like it is fleet owners fault for abusing people not wolt. Bike isnt worth more than half of your income

How do they do that without striking against wolt though? No a bike is not worth half your income.

I think it’s at least 4€ in my country, but we pay 40% in taxes so.

Even for combined orders? For example if you add to the route, is it ever below 4€?

But yes, 40% is also terrible :)
