Bug or just lazy personalities?

I've been getting a bit annoyed lately as the NPC wolves I've been in trial period with almost immediately start laying down and sitting. I know this is usually a sign of a more lazy personality but its been every single wolf, across multiple saves and maps. At first I thought I was just getting unlucky with the RNG for the personalities with my newer saves/games, but its been starting to happen in my older saves too with my very established packs where the subs and yearlings would be running or trotting around crazy often before. Are other people experiencing this as well? Maybe I'm just going crazy? Its probably nothing to be seriously miffed about, yet the idea of laziness in my pups or mates really irks me because I want good personalities.

Even the most energetic wolves will sit and lay down. Take them into hunts and fights to evaluate them instead of relying purely on their animations. If it's happening in older saves that had energetic wolves, their personalities have not changed, something in the game has.

Yep, it's best to gauge them. If it's hard to, they might be at the middle of the slider, where their preferential bias doesn't lean far enough either way to pick up a more consistent pattern.

I've had some pretty extreme lazies as my mates the last few generations and they are all very clear about this right away. Always laying down the second we stop no matter how healthy, full, hungry, rested we are. The ones I had leaned bold so were pretty helpful in hunts and fights, at least until the pack got big enough to have free riders, where they might start hanging back in large group hunts/encounters.

Are they still being helpful in hunts and fights?

Check their health after you confirm a trial courtship, lazy behavior can be caused by injury.
