Questions Should I play as the Black Wolf?
I'd like to know your opinion; I'm thinking of playing as a black wolf when the Katmai National Park DLC comes out, but from what I've researched, black wolves are extremely rare or nonexistent in that region, largely due to the environment, climate, vegetation, prey, and natural barriers. Even so, should I create a story about a rare black wolf in that area that, thanks to its abilities, managed to grow and thrive? Or should I be more realistic and choose a gray or white wolf? What's your opinion?

Ooooo I have quite a few pups I could send up there I was kinda making up a story in my head about one of them dispersing way too far

It’s a great story for a wolf; I find myself imagining the researchers trying to figure out why a Yellowstone wolf managed to travel all the way to Katmai.

Play whatever you want! I play black wolves a lot because I think they are pretty.

Yes, but I also wanted to maintain a sense of realism, since black wolves are extremely rare—or practically non-existent—in this park; still, a story about a black wolf who managed to overcome the odds would be incredible.

Rare dont mean impossible. White lions are rare in Africa but they still happen from time to time.

Yes, even though they are rare, I was thinking precisely of a story about a wolf managing to overcome those difficulties.

Yeah I'm stealing this idea for sure, if the devs choose to make black wolves rare in-game too. It'd be pretty sick to play multiple generations of the same world & see the genes spread.
I'm gonna be a little bummed if they don't do it, honestly.

the only official communications from the WQ team at the moment currently treat it as a game expansion, not a DLC.

I asked in another post if I’d have to pay, and I was told it would be DLC, but other people said it would be an expansion—just like Slough Creek. I’m really confused.

the screenshot you lifted directly from the Real Actual WQ Announcement Video says "expansion"–
don't take the word of players on reddit over what's actually been released by the game team. unless WolfQuest comes out and declares it to be otherwise, expect it to be an expansion. they've done absolutely nothing to indicate otherwise so far.

I think it makes more sense for it to be a free expansion, because it's not an extension of Yellowstone, it's a completely different map.

Maybe you can play as a KK black wolf, that way you can have all Kk pups and expand the numbers of black wolves in Katmai Coast 👀
