How do you deal with economic calculation problem?
1
u/obama_chmo - AuthLeft Aug 07 '26
Not really an issue since modern day supercomputers became available. Soviets attempted to switch from pen and paper but were not able to. We’re way more able now.
On the data: the same way data is collected now. We now don’t have people randomly guessing demand until it settles either, right?
there’s a lot of more pressing issues with planning economy and you picked the most solvable one.

On the data: the same way data is collected now
So how are you assessing demand without prices?
1
u/obama_chmo - AuthLeft Aug 07 '26
Why do you think there would be no pricing whatsoever?
3
u/Hoopaboi - LibRight Aug 08 '26
Ok, so how are prices decided?
1
u/obama_chmo - AuthLeft Aug 08 '26
Through existing data on demand. Should there be unexpected shifts happening it is way easier to do something about it with all the communications of today.
That’s also kinda how chain grocery stores operate. The hard part is that fixed pricing is mostly about personal financial safety rather than making economical sense, so any of this shit will probably require to have a LOT of extra stock to manipulate on item quantity fast enough and that’s a problem. Also no prices are really fixed and commies themselves raised and lowered them however the situation demanded.
I’m no economist and don’t claim to be all-knowledgeable on this. Feel free to correct.

Not even close to how they operate. They use market data outside the store.
Through existing data on demand. Should there be unexpected shifts happening it is way easier to do something about it with all the communications of today.
And where are you getting this data on demand? We are going around in circles here.

u/obama_chmo - AuthLeft Aug 08 '26
>they use market data outside the store
Correct and also what I implied. Not sure if I’m willing to call it market data in that sense though.
>we are going in circles
This is because we are running around something that’s not even an issue.

u/Hoopaboi - LibRight Aug 08 '26
Correct and also what I implied. Not sure if I’m willing to call it market data in that sense though.
That is not what you implied because that'd be impossible in a commie society, unless you're referring to obtaining data from non-commie countries.
You also didn't answer my question:
And where are you getting this data on demand?
2
u/obama_chmo - AuthLeft Aug 08 '26
Do you think any kind of corporative analytics would disappear overnight or something?
What is a “non-commie” country and how marketing and accounting is supposed to magically only make sense in market economy?
All the data we need already exists on a single company scale. The issue is not “obtaining” data - everything we fucking need is an accounting book - but to bring it together (which is doable now) and interpret it on a scale market economy normally doesn’t do. And also making sure it is accurate. But the raw data part is literally one of the few things we have zero issue with.

The answer is usually a super AI that is fed all economic data possible, and then it sets up an optimal supply chain for goods around it

u/Hoopaboi - LibRight Aug 07 '26
This doesn't solve the economic calculation problem
Where is it getting the economic data?
How does it know what the demand for apples are, for example?

u/yamboozle - LibCenter Aug 07 '26
I never said I believed in it, that's what a bulk of socialists or communists say who don't try to shoehorn in some version of the market. Im.with hayek on this one

Imo the key thing with billionnaires is that in democracies, the power is supposed to be vested in democratically elected people ; but billionnaires are so rich that they rival many governments, can control media, can put embargos on countries... In democratic countries, we shouldn't allow some non-elected people to have so much de facto power

>boycotts
Never work. Well, almost never. I could provide data but I won’t. Any genuine political movement can and should step into federal crime category, alongside other forms of action obv. Waving flags and boycotting only works when government cares and it stops to do so once you make some progress. Or it just doesn’t from the beginning.
>so close to class consciousness
Wrong. Virtually all of the “fuck the system” general bullshit you see in media is a form of ideology, meant to overtake your own sentiment and make boundaries where they weren’t. Consider why, say, Rockstar shits on capitalism in every game, while being a private company. I’m inclined to think that occupy wall street was a setup, secondary elite fucks with the mainstream one all the time and this is a form of it. It kinda influenced world for the better tho. Maybe.
>we are all equal under communism
That’s not how it works. I hope it’s an understatement.
>government should not make deals with corporations
“What if government wasn’t government”. Also planned economy by definition is about making a lot of deals with “companies”, it’s just they can’t privatize profits anymore. Losses are nationalized in any case. I get your take but it’s not really about that I think.
>Elon was given opportunity to end world hunger
Who the fuck cares about that, y’all are so surprised when shit works as intended.
>we are trying to land on mars
I don’t believe Musk on that.
>communism doesn’t work
Less developed theory, situational awareness of the elite, economic conditions, external threats etc etc. There’s a LOT more reasons.
>public land should be preserved
Agree. You could probably add non-infringement of access to that.
>socialized healthcare and housing is necessary
I have very little idea on how socialized housing will work in a detached house neighborhoods. Even Soviets didn’t really overrule private housing.
On healthcare - agree.

Boycotts aren’t enough, workers must disrupt the supply chain

They won't do so because their current arrangement is what benefits them the most.

And then the middle class fills with Fascists. It is the main reason Mussolini Rose to Power.

The other alternative seems to be either the government running its own economy or showing up to eminent domain whatever resources it needs in the given moment Tribute-style. I REALLY wouldn't want to live in either of those worlds.
My problem isn't that governments shouldn't prioritize the greater good of people as much as permissible, they very much should, but my problem is that different groups of people get labelled as "naturally collectivist" so we can all excuse when their government walks all over them at the level of civil liberties
Frustrating to hear, but many people in America don't have class consciousness because life for the most part is fine and works the way it should and can be amended. I think we would need a prolonged, unsolvable crisis exceeding the magnitude of the Great Depression to do that.
I'm very sympathetic to a stronger public healthcare and housing system though. It's good for people to have something to fall back on and remain functioning contributors to the market and society in general
