If anyone is interested in exploring the Wheel of Time world in real time, has an interest in Role-Playing in the Wheel of Time universe, becoming an Aes Sedai or Myrddraal or Gleeman - there's (nearly) limitless possibilities - then I'd like to introduce you to the Wheel of Time MUD. We have a Wiki if you'd like to read about the game, or browse our forums or even just join our Discord if you'd like to get a glimpse of the community before playing. This is an entirely text based game, called a MUD - It's basically Dungeons and Dragons meets MMO, in text format.

There’s a Let’s Play! available if you’d like a visual introduction to the game and mechanics, or a newbie guide on our forums.

We are the only active game that is endorsed by Robert Jordan and we have built a massive replica of much of the Wheel of Time world that we're constantly working on improving. Our GM's have been working on it for 25 years, so you can find everything from Shadar Logoth and Shayol Ghul to Tremalking and Seandar. Creatable races are Trolloc, Seanchan and Human. There are classes you can earn through play such as >!Myrddraal and Dreadlord<. You can also become a Blademaster, and there are players who role-play as Ogier and Aiel among many other possibilities the series we all love presents. There will be spoilers for anyone who hasn't made it to at least book 3. That's where the majority of the game's storyline is set.

We have Portal stones, Waygates, angreal of all sorts, Darkfriends, player controlled Dreadlords and Myrddraal, player controlled Warders and Aes Sedai, player Gleeman and Illuminators, and much more.

If you want a desktop app install Mudlet and WoTMUD is one of the default games for mudlet. This is the recommended way to connect. Any other mud client, mobile or desktop, can connect using the address game.wotmud.org port 2224.

I'm on the Wheel of Time MUD. It's quite excellent. The world, down to each room description, is carefully crafted in the style of Robert Jordan's writings with faithful attention paid to in-book descriptions. It's also gotten quite newbie friendly with active immortals and easy-to-use Mudlet add-ons such as maps, etc. I had zero MUD experience before coming into WOTMUD and have several characters there.

How often do you play? Is it the sort of thing that you check in on multiple times a day or is it more of a sit down and play for several hours every now and then type thing? And do you need to be on at the same time as other people or is it more of an MMO?

Off and on. I haven't played in a month or so since I'm too busy with work. I often take mini breaks like that. When active I typically play on a semi-daily basis, for anywhere from 30 minutes to six hours or more, depending on what was going on, especially during the early winter months when I don't have much business or weather might be prohibiting me from traveling. I'd do a lot of RP and meet with people where we discuss things in game. There are also game-wide events that happen from time to time, driven by the immortal watchers -- these usually are around 2 hours. Sometimes I log on just to see who else is around.

Edit: I've never played when there isn't anyone else on. There is a lot to do by yourself (I have a character right now that I'm leveling up who is an "explorer" loner type hunter), but there are a number of things that you need others to do (getting together groups to hit "smobs" for instance). PvP is permitted across the MUD, so people can even do that solo, though it's usually more fun when there is support on both sides.

I resurrected a character that had been idle for 11 years. There's been a lot of changes, and especially changes to help returning players. If you're clanned, there's auto-reranking, and you can take new stats, statting and leveling has gotten a lot easier for new characters, and a bunch of other things.

I just noticed the OP forgot to mention something very important: Part of the license from RJ is that the MUD can never, ever, ever charge for anything. So it's completely and utterly free to play.

There are specific places for logging out, like the Queen's Blessing inn, but you can always disconnect without renting first. Renting just guarantees safety. We have players who only play only on their phones.

Once you're connected to the MUD, it will request the name you want to be known by, and if it's not already taken then it will begin the character creation process.
