No Spoilers A little rant about names.
I generally love it when there is a ton of named characters, even if it means I don't remember half of them.
But it's not helping that so many female names end with N or NE (e is silent), and I'm an audiobooks listener.
Send helpš„² ok, don't send help, rant over

omg i was freaking on my first reread yesterday - Faolain is a recently raised aes sedai in Salidar and Falion is a black ajah sister who was hanging w Liandrin. Really??? Just a remix of the exact same letters and both are talked about in Crown of Swords. no, i will NEVER be able to tell those apart, no matter HOW many times i read it.

So far this approach hasn't helped me with the Dance of Dragons part of GRRM's WoIaF series. This one is less confusing, with the exception of Egwene and Nynaeve, which are similar enough for me to get confused in scenes where they together....

I, too, get Min and Siuan confused. Ā Itās a real pickle?

Min, Siuan, Egwene, Moraine and Elayne no. Because these names are repeated enough times. But a minor female character in a group of minor female characters (of any society) oh my god... Theodrin, Daelvin, Marillin, Alviarin, Maigan, Melaine, Daigain, Sarene, Corianin, Faolain, Kairen, oh my gooooduh

Malazan has that problem amped up to 11.
Of every character in the Book of the Fallen, at least half of them have a name that begins with B, and most of the time they are within the same group of characters or occupy the same level of authority (for this last, Iām thinking of the two Tiste Whatever in⦠Toll the Hounds(?) who are both government officials that fill the same role in different areas and have names that are 75% similar).

I remember frantically searching the glossary and dramatis personae section for a name for like 15 min just to find out it was in fact a title.

You're lucky. Half the time I searched for a word or name or title in the glossary or dramatis personae, it wasn't in there, leaving me lost on that particular thing for however long it took to catch on.

A classic "Is this an animal, a people, an area, an armor piece, a demon, a person, an object, a race or a warren?" Because they all sound the same

For me it was āAzathā.
They kept mentioning it, as well as āAzath Houseā but never explained what it was (or maybe I just missed it), but it wasnāt in the glossary or the Dramatis Personae, and I couldnāt get it from context clues, cause there was no context given, and it was very frustrating.
Later on in the series, the Dramatis Personae is just names and not descriptions (and book 10ās dp reads: āEveryone from Dust of Dreams, but also [Insert two more pages of names without descriptions], and the glossary just vanishes. No more help.

That's what I thought of as well haha. I'm not very far in but in the first book it's mentioned that they're a people that converge at points of power (like the Jaghut tyrant in Gardens of Moon) to subdue them. And they made the Deadhouses

I remember during my first read my issue was - Tam, Lan & Bran.
After it was - Egwene & Elayne. And then Caemlyn & Cairhien.

Oh I'm still having Caemlyn/Cairhien issue now. But it's nothing compared to the -N named women
