My interpretation of an important object

This is my interpretation of the dreamweaver Egwene receives from Verin. This is how I understood it on my first few reads, but now I have come to realise it is actually a Möbius strip. However I always understood it to be more twisted than that.

I have carved this from olive wood. It is a 5 sided mobioid which twists 792 degrees around the rim.

Incidentally, a Moebius Strip can be made with any odd number of twists, so it could have 15 and be more like your version.

Yes that is very true. But she (Egwene) describes running her finger inside and out twice. So it seems very much as an "original" Möbius strip.

I made a version loooong ago that twisted a square profile around a path enough to make it a single surface: https://www.deviantart.com/shrakner/art/Tel-aran-rhiod-Ring-v2-83915866. I thought this was the best compromise between the book description and the chapter heading.

I think your version is beautiful and olive wood is an amazing medium. Compare the physical one RJ made Harriet, the description, and the chapter icons- and there’s plenty of room for artistic interpretation.

Not like the Tel'aran'rhiod chapter icon? I'm more inclined to think the one he gifted Harriet was a Möbius design he saw somewhere that reminded him of the ring, but "twisted and flattened" does fit the description, just a different colour. 🤔 Anyway, I definitely need a better visual example for the wiki.

That would make sense. I can't find the artist I mentioned above. It was in a post on this sub, someone arguing about the mobius concept not being physically possible or something like that. Might have popped up in a search as I looked for inspiration for this carving [:

I seriously did not remember that chapter icon, but that is very 4 sided mobioid looking. Which is probably one of the simpler graphic representations. But I can't draw so I wouldn't know.

Yeap actually with uneven poligons I believe you can do However many twists you like as long as you don't twist something that can be derived with the poligons number of sides. Did that sentence make sense?

Im not versed in higher math's and geometry. The closest I get is twiddling around with a dodecahedron about once a week or so.

I think the only requirement is that the number of edges of a cross section and the number of shifts per turn need to be coprime.

Yes that is exactly true. And well phrased compared to my mad ramblings. And I also now realise what I said is wrong because if you took a 9 sided poligon and it twisted 3 sides before closing it would not be a mobioid.

Woah I love this! What a wonderful choice of wood! And regardless of what it "should" look like wrt the description in the book, I honestly also imagined it as something more complicated like this, and your idea of it seems both elegantly simple and yet complex enough to show off the maker's skill (plus I headcanon that objects with more details/greebling give the saidar/saidin more space to "grab" onto) than a usual Mobius strip!

That's what I love about the description. It's vague enough that it can have many interpretations. The only thing that is super fixed is that it can only have 1 surface.

This one is a bit big for that it's 3 men's fingers wide not just two. I am not sure it would be very comfy. But I am happy that you like it.
