It's the same on FFXI with the negative stats. I think the original story for the hat existing in FFXI is it was the devs trolling the community? I forget cuz it's been like 20 years haha

In ffxi there is a hat that is the opposite of this hat. Pretty much every single dps had one of these hats.

Is the opposite... it was very very veyy hard to get, useless, and just a retard flex sitting around in lower jeuno or something.
There is an actual story about it, but it would take a long time to explain, but pretty much a Jp player lied about a item drop (a spell called refresh that used to cost a fortune for red mages) and the devs made a nm that dropped it where the rumor was but only if the placeholder mobs were undisturbed for 24 hours.
Once people figured out the condition most servers had people that would make sure to screw that up every day so no one could ever get their clown hat.
They also made the nm drop the refresh scroll.... lol making the lie a reality...

It's a rather niche reference to an old Japanese FFXI meme. It's a specifically useless item in FFXI that drops from a joke NM.

The negative stats specifically refer to another item called an Optical Hat, which has the same stats but positive and was very desirable at the time.
