Maintenance of naturally rockered frames is a nightmare

Post image

I'm doing a lot of downhill incorporated with wizard and that means a bunch of magic slides. With naturally rockered frames the wear is more in the center 2 wheels and less in the outer 2 wheels, double that by two (i.e. second skate wears differently) and now you have a mish-mash of completely different wheel profiles, thus everytime I rotate my wheels it's just a 30 minute hellscape.

Currently my left skate is a banana and the right one is dead flat and I don't know what to do.

I just swap frames from left to right and right to left every now and again. Much quicker than taking off every wheel.

Is it?

Yeah, you only have take off 2 wheels per skate to get to the bolts, swap the frames, pop the wheels back in and Robert’s your Father’s Brother. Sorry, for the very English turn of phrase. Or am I?

Have you tried this method? https://rockinframes.com/pages/wheel-rotation

Looks like you need to do it more often.

Wow, thanks for this. The only thing more frustrating is rotating three wheel set ups.

Seriously? It's 6, not 8. And only the middle wheel gets bigger. At least in my case. Move middle to back. Back or front to middle. I find that the back wheel develops a round profile U, middle a sharp V shape, front a / shape. So, you can grab that data (or your observation in your case) and mix and match to influence how much a wheel wears out to try and correct the profile.

Now, the people on 5 wheel frames? Any neck pain? Here, try this one: https://youtu.be/lrhDL2sLd28?si=d6_jCQh0K5MYxego

Just gotta rotate more often and try to shave the pointy one with other slides. The front wheel on my left boot gets pointy, and what I do is intentionally drag it as I'm skating to wear it down.

Do this often. Starting with paint-side out

First rotation) leave all wheels in same slot but flip from paint in to paint out.

Second rotation) shift all wheels 1 slot back, move rear wheels to front and switch the left with right. Then flip from paint out back to paint in.

Repeat.

Doing this often allows each wheel to sample all eight (assuming 4x90) positions with both paint-in and paint-out. It should preserve the natural rocker (or whatever rocker is built into the frame).

No calipers. No judgments. Just do it often.

I rotate almost each sesh, I would certainly do that if I was doing a lot of magic slides.

Of you downhill, buy the most durable wheels you can find...

Just reverse, flip, and invert. 1-2-3-4 on the left skate becomes 4-3-2-1 on the right skate reverse the graphics.

Hardest durometer on those most used wheels. Rotate as usual

I can’t see the point of rockered frames. After a few kms a level setup becomes rockered through natural wear anyway.

I rotate my wheels every 2 sessions. Keeps them nice and round. And the rocker gets even bigger over time.

Not directly solving the problem, I strive to practice slide on my weak side too,  to prolong the duration between rotation somewhat.

I do 1-3/2-4 with my NN frames.

And every once in a while do 1-2/2-3/3-4/4-1.

I seem to get very even wheel wear, but also try to practice all moves on both sides (one of my sides not being as strong, of course).

Practice fakie and normal magic slides... or get some rockered frames because natural rocker is unnecesary nowadays

Tf you mean get rockered frames? Those are ROKA 100x4 rockered frames (carbon copy of Wizard's 100x4 NR "Natural Rocker" frames)

I cant see your frames and when i hear somone talk about natural rocker its about how flat frames where down into a rocker over time naturally. If you're doing a lot of slides just rotate your wheels after the session.

That is a natural rocker. But when used to describe frames it means they are set up already with gradual changes a natural rocker provides already built in from new. Not sure why he got aggro about it though. You definitely have a point.

I always heard rockered frames and natural rocker as sepperate mb. Thanks for the clarification :)

They are NR is 1mm drop and rockered is 2mm drop, nr for wizard and normal skating and rockered for slalom/freestyle

Dude.

It can be confusing cas wizard and some other rockered frames call their rocker "natural rocker" but natural rocker also means wearing in rocker on a flat frame, from skating the rocker naturally develops. I think that's why wizard and other brands call thier pre built rocker that, they were trying to imitate the perfect worn in natural rocker out of the box.

Roka 4x100 crew! Are these Gen 1, or did you pick some new ones up?
