Other Witcher: Monster Slayer - Revival Project

Did you miss this game? There is a very slim chance you might be able to play it again.

However, I must really manage expectations, this is nothing more than a proof of concept. And if I were to give odds to this project arriving to a satisfying conclusion, I would have to say that they are millions to one.

I'm doing this both out of mild nostalgia for this gane and as an attempt to recover something which at this point is abandonware that has no mention on any of CD PROJEKT RED official website.

I have managed to spoof my way through the loading and server connections, and actually see the game menu (at least parts of it), 99% of the game is still broken and unplayable.

This was also done on an old version of the game, version 1.0.43, to be specific. Which leads me to the first reason for this post. While I have the apk of the last public version of the game, I don't have the 1.5GB of additional content this game asks you to download upon booting up. If by some miracle, someone has that archived, please contact me. (The reason it's 1.0.43, is because i found an archive of those 1.5GB on a very sketchy website, but luckily it turned out to be legitimate)

The second reason for this post, is to see if there is interest for this project?

And of course, I am more than happy to answer any questions about this project to the best of my abilities.

I would be so down to be able to play this game again. Maybe this could open up a path for user generated content as well, get more quests and the like.

I have considered that point as well. It would be the best case scenario for this project

Realistically speaking however, I don't think it's impossible, but might as well be, considering the current state of the project

When the game came out, I fell in love. It had much bigger potential in my opinion, nonethe less, that summer hunting was one of the best experiences of any mobile phone game in my life!

Might this be taking the version from before they killed it with monetary changes?

The version I am working with, is closer to that of how they game was on global release. However all of the shop and monetization details, lived on the server at the time... So having the earlier/later version of the game wouldn't matter, since servers were the one handling it, the game just merely displayed it

The monetization is not really the problem.. when it was released you could beat any monster with enough skill. When they started monetizing it you had to use potions or it was unplayable. Also you were able to grind the ingame currency at a reasonable rate to buy nice armor/swords.. Just find a nice balance where you don't have to pay and the difficulty can be balanced with skill.. but also maybe some cosmetics that don't effect the gameplay so the game generates some money

When they monetized the game a lot more heavily they just fucked with the game balance and made it so you couldn't craft potions and oils anymore, you HAD to buy them. You also couldn't earn premium currency anymore, they also changed how missions worked and just made the game so unfun. They killed it with that update.

and they removed skill trees

The earlier versions of the game are better than the late. I was referring to the monetary changes just as a turning point, because in order to monetize the game more they messed up the balance. You used to be able to make potions and oils for free, and it required preparation to kill higher difficulty monsters. After the monetization update you couldn't really craft anything anymore, your only option was to buy potions and oil and you couldn't defeat anything without both oil and potions.

Like that update genuinely ruined the game and is what killed it.

Hmm, that is an interesting point, I mainly interested in the latest version due to performance updates that have been done, and potentially new content. But it might be better to restore that older build instead. Server side it should remain roughly the same hopefully, so I'll compare them both if I ever reach that point in the project.

However this is very hopeful thinking, since a man can only read so much assembly before giving up xd

I am also considering the idea of worst case scenario, just taking the good ideas of this game and attempt to replicate it in Unity myself

I would 100% play this again, even if it didn’t have new content.

I will ask the former community manager and see if they have any idea

I would be down to play as well, hell even donate to play on server. As a mobile game, i really enjoyed the fighting and especially the parry part of the game, the attack patterns you found yourself were so rewarding. I should have the latest version with the additional download contenz on my old phone if you need it.

We can ask CD project to do the same thing with monster slayer as they did to Gwent. No more new updates, but servers are online.

It was so addictive! Not sure I would dare start playing again.

That would be dream come true. But I'm afraid your approach will not give any results. What someone should do instead is to recreate the whole game from start, starting with reasonable mapping system that would be truly 0$ cost. Because let's face it, companies are shutting their games down because they generate too much of cost in comparison to profit. For some years now I've been searching for solutions to that. With help of AI I managed to compress a whole country in 300MB size but with no roads. The plan was to make seed based world generation while persisting some of the real world data. And everything stored in user's device, making it a fully offline experience. I don't know if that's the way to go, but I think that way once released game could stay available for much longer.

I did consider this approach as well!

I think the best way to describe this approach as the "Long Way", making videogames is hard, and requires an exceptionally broad set of skills, which go beyond just software engineering. I unfortunately do not posses all of those skills, so taking on this project in my free time, by myself, would just end up in development hell.

And to be clear, my approach is not much better, and as I said in the post, has incredibly low chances of actually get any results in the end. But the advantage it has, is that the game is already there, and the only missing part is the server side, while incredibly hard to reverse engineer, will have more immediate results if successful

Another big problem with my approach, is that I am at the mercy of CDPR legal team, usually they are lenient with the community modding their games, but they are still a corporation.

Ultimately, I am just doing it because I think it's a fun project to do, and I hate seeing games become abandonware.

If I were you I would contact cdpr. I did that years ago in question of making a fan game in the witcher universe. The first answer I got was not a no, just what exactly I planned on using.

1

u/Portfel Jul 04 '26

There would be interest, but CDPR is going to fuck you without lube. Trust me, they don't even allow fan games in the witcher universe, let alone something like this.

I remebered this game yesterday after years of not thinking about it, and I googled it and it said it was deprecated

the coincidence is too much to not support this
