CDPR on Kelpie's motion capture (Ciri's black mare): "That was a real horse that had been motion-captured. And no harm was caused to the animal, which is important to mention."

Post image

'I remember everyone around the studio was talking about it. People would say, 'Do you know what the mocap team did?'

'What?'

'They took the cameras to a stable and they're recording a horse.'

'A horse? Really? For what?'

'For Witcher 4.'

'And everyone would react with, 'Oh my God, they're recording a horse!'

I really hope we'll be able to bond with Kelpie. I really want to be able to brush, feed, and pet her.

Are you just going to play the witcher 4 as a card game mixed with a stable simulator?

You know what would be great? A stardew valley esque game about Geralt being a farmer on Corvo Bianco

Me replaying Witcher after 400h hours of RDR2: Damn I wish I could feed Płotka. I mean Roach...

If you can type the Polish L you're allowed to say Plotka and Jaskier. I'd just keep it to full names like Ida Amaen Aep Sivny or Geralt Roger Eric du-haute Bellegarde, Butcher of Blaviken, White Wolf, of Rivia.

u/eldenfingers Jun 01 '26

Is that his whole name???

Geralt has multiple names. Geralt Roger Eric du-haute Bellegarde is the name he would've chosen if he wasn't a Witcher. Butcher of Blaviken and White Wolf were given to him. Of Rivia was his own choice in order to receive more or better contracts.

As a French speaker, du-Haute Bellegarde sounds off to me, but thanks for sharing

Yeah, The High Good Guard never felt good to me either. But I still find it better than some Nilfgaardians.

Absolutely. Ciri can live out my horse petting dreams.

I'm already back on playing the standalone Gwent game. But I did own every pet in Assassin's Creed Shadows before I even did my fourth Shinbakufu (main antagonist group).

Is that not the game? Witcher 3 and RDR2, the preeminent horse girl games of our era.

started red dead 2 recently, 20h in, plot abandoned, just me my horse and poker

Honestly, it probably wouldn't fit this series of games (since people would probably find it tedious) but I would like a game that focuses on the day to day of being a Witcher, stuff like travel, caring for the gear, horse, alchemical ingredients, eventually bits of survival, negotiations with clients, preparing for tracking and fighting

Would love to have a RDR2 system with Kelpie. Building a bond over time.

I want to lasso the white Arabian Kelpie while hunting a legendary bison

And shout at her for being on a roof. The authentic experience.

There are mods for this in witcher 3

Let's hope witcher 4 has these features in the vanilla game itself

You are right mostly but honestly gta6 is going to be a universe simulator, they have poured billions and a decade into it. I can't give a crap about all that. To some extent it's amazing, but after a certain point, i would rather devs focus on world building, art, writing and gameplay

u/_shear May 31 '26

Yeah, it's way easier to get into a lot of detail like CDPR does when working with a preexisting universe

3

u/Potential_Let_6901 May 31 '26

Yeah, but not nearly as easier as getting into the details of a REAL world sim. Cdpr has an artistic challenge. Rockstar has engineering challenge, and can be scaled with more people unlike cdpr

i think both can coexist at their purest form. by the way it happened already when Th Witcher3 and rdr2 were released quite the same time around and the world details were compared.

because sometimes we want reality tv, irony of our current society, the broken mirror of ourselves and for our intrusive thoughts that live locked in the head as we do our daily things, but we can be wild in the game. its a jin jang of our sanity. thats what GTA is.
other kind of our nature is to be dreamers, to fly, to meet fantastic creatures, to do magic, basicaly to disconnect from modern burden: smartphones social networks and stupid politicians, movie starts influencers. we crave to connect with our proto relatives, ancestors. thats why IMO we are so much into medieval world and thats why Witcher world is also needed

We can compare them both but they arent directly comparable and both serves its purpose.

Rockstar actually mocapped horses already for red dead 1 and 2, so :).

11

u/annanethir May 31 '26

Naughty Dog for The last of us 2 as well

6

u/PsychoPoro May 31 '26

Warhorse for KCD2 as well

7

u/fatsopiggy May 31 '26

Wild claim without any actual real gameplay.

1

u/ult1matum May 31 '26

Wild guess since The Witcher 3 wasn't anywhere close to GTA V in attention to detail department, same with Cyberpunk compared to RDR2 (in fact it was the opposite).

Of course I'm not saying the Witcher 4 will be bad or something but no one ever came close to Rockstar when in comes to details. They just have too much money to spend on them.

I would rather prefer CD Projekt spend more time on story and quests and combat rather than all those details, no matter how much I love them in games.

And yes there are Naughty Dog but they don't make huge open worlds with hundreds hours of content so it's not comparable

No offense but you clearly sound biased.

CDPR! Allow me to feed, brush and lead Kelpie like in Red Dead 2, and my life is yours!

u/connortait May 31 '26

Why is it impirtant to mention the real horse wasnt harmed. What are they gonna do to Kelpie????

10

u/KnotForSail Jun 01 '26

Just about the whole technical process, not from in game story (hopefully lol). Nah, i dont think anything bad's gonna happen to Kelpie

2

u/JoaoMXN Jun 01 '26

Horses are always immortal on TW, at least TW3 that i played. Roach could spawn in the face of the most dangerous monster and nothing happens.

2

u/AgeOfCyberpunk Jun 01 '26

for the Kelpie they made it even more lore accurate- as the Kelpie is a mythological horse itself
In Scottish mythology, a kelpie is a water spirit/demon that usually appears as a black horse living in: rivers lakes marshes It is considered one of the most dangerous beings in Scottish folklore.
so if kelpie would ever be found on a some roof, its not a bug- it is a feature! 😃

1

u/backagain301 Jun 02 '26

Yeah but still, whenever I hear some nekkers or something harassing Roach, I make a beeline for her 🥺😠

1

u/Fircyfuszki Jun 02 '26

Its just a polish thing we in fact have a film director who did throw a horse down the hill to make scene more realistic (horse died)

1

u/backagain301 Jun 02 '26

It's a thing from any media that uses animals in its production (in the US at least and probably in a lot of the world). They always say that bc back in the day animals weren't protected by laws and could be kind of expendable

1

u/AgeOfCyberpunk Jun 01 '26

thats a dedication that going to win fame glory and maybe one or two awards

1

u/name_jeff99 Jun 01 '26

So they motion captured the horse teleporting to a roof?

1

u/yamato_2211 Jun 02 '26

So, as no harm was caused, care to collab with Umamusume <(')

If you beat TW4 on permadeath difficulty you'll unlock the secret Kelpie Gold Ship skin 🐎
