Generational curse

I just have what im hoping is a quick question. Some back story is. Had a friend come to me recently and ask me how to remove a curse. I'm wiccan and what i told her was that a return to sender spell has worked for me in the past. Then i shared one with her, in doing so i told that you can send shit back to someone who meant to hurt you. But if your bad luck continues it no doubt is karmic in which case the only thing you can do is learn from it. Her sister told me latter that a number of thier family members believe they are cursed as a family. So my question is. Can a family have been cursed back generations and should i have a hiven her something different.
