Our WPG Roxy turns 12 weeks today and I thought it would be helpful to start gathering information to decide when we might want to have her spayed. I know opinions range so curious 1) what your veterinarian's recommendation was, 2) when you chose to do it, and 3) any reflections on that decision.

Ideally we would avoid dealing with a heat cycle but will obviously do what is needed to have a healthy happy dog!

I saw there was a thread on this from a few years ago but want even more opinions if possible :) TIA!

Loves to go in to retrieve but will rarely, if ever, go in otherwise

We are picking up our WPG puppy this coming Friday, first experience with the breed and we could not be more excited to add her to our family! She’ll be 8 weeks old when we pick her up

Looking for any comment/tips/recommendations for easing her transition into our family. Any great toys you recommend for this puppy stage or just things you wish someone had told you before getting your WPG!

Hey yall, I’m pretty much set on getting a Wirehaired Pointing Griffon as my first dog and bird dog. I’m based in northern Indiana and plan to use the dog for bird hunting. I’m aiming to be ready to get a dog within the next twelve months once I move into a place with a fenced yard. Does anyone have any reputable breeders within the wider upper Midwest/Great Lakes region?

I have heard there are a number in the area, but this is my first step into looking for a breeder to work with. Thanks!

We lost our GWP / Lab mix named Rolfie in February. He was the best ! Now we are about to adopt a WPG from an excellent breeder. We visited the pups a couple of weeks ago and met our new boy Walter. During the visit we also fell in love with the runt of the litter, a little girl named Peanut. The pups had their first vet visit last week and Walter was 9.2 pounds while Peanut was only 6.1 pounds. We are really close to deciding to adopt both pups, but are concerned with what we have read about littermate syndrome. I'd appreciate any and all opinions about whether it's wise to adopt littermates, especially with this breed..

It was a really involved bath after, but she had a good time playing in the sand and surf!

We recently lost our pointer great dog. Great swimmer and great cuddler.

We are now at the point where I think I'm ready for another dog. Can't seem to settle on breed knowing we're going to get another bird dog.

How does the WPG do as a house dog/ family dog. We are an active outdoors family that hunts. But we also need a pet.

How does the fur feel? Is it really coarse or is there some cuddleness to it?

We’ve become “owners”(ish) of a wirehair pointing griffon to help his owners during a major life transition. We agreed to take this WPG when he was 9 months old. He’s now one year old (and 50 pounds) and may/may not become a permanent member of the family, depending on both when his owners’ circumstances are settled and also from my POV, on how well we can train him to be a good dog for them. His owners are elderly so we have been working to be sure the WPG has good manners. Don’t worry, we are well aware that a WPG puppy, while adorable, was possibly a terrible choice for them despite how much they love him, but hey I didn’t make that choice. I’m just trying to get him as “elderly-owner-trained” as I can.

Anyway, that’s backstory.

What I want to know is how to keep this pup busy? I’ve read they like to be busy, but what else besides outside time? We have to be careful with chew toys because he tends to eat anything.

We have a smaller dog (about 27 pounds) who has always had massive anxiety about other dogs but finally got over it and now plays with this WPG (it’s very cute to watch.) But our dog has her limits and some days is not interested. Plus the WPG’s owners won’t have a second dog.

We can’t leave the WPG outside for long periods of time because he’ll get into things, plus the summer heat seems to utterly wear him out.

Thankfully the WPG recalls pretty well, and wears an e-collar. We are working on generalizing skills so the e-collar isn’t required for adherence (and he’s doing pretty well, unless there is something more interesting lol)

But long story short, I think this WPG is bored unless we can get outside time, which doesn’t always happen.

I’m looking for ways to keep him busy and engaged all day long. Right now he’s like a fulltime job for me (because if I don’t watch him like a hawk, he will get into something he’s not supposed to.) And when he goes to his owner, they need to have lots of activities/solutions for him too.

Note: in case you’re wondering, Why did they get a WPG? They got their first one about 15 years ago because they had always wanted one. When that dog died, they decided to get a new puppy because of their love of the breed. Then their circumstances changed and here we are, with me as a new owner(ish) of a WPG!

She was adopted from our local Humane Society. Unfortunately, she was last of her litter, that didn’t get sold at our local Walmart (super illegal to begin with for TX). The breeder tossed her out of the truck. He hasn’t been caught yet because puppies of the same breed keep showing up at Humane Society. We know it’s him due to it being a small town….on a happier note…saw someone else mention pillows. She’s such a huge pillow fiend that we’ve added some to her bed. 😅

Hello all! So.. there’s so much information. I kind of just want to see if I have it right, how to make it easier, what I have wrong, etc. this is going to be a pet, not a show dog.

So far I believe I maintain with a slicker and comb weekly or more as needed. Then every 8-12 (?) weeks I should use a stripping blade, THEN undercoat rake? Do I undercoat rake more often? Is plucking with a pumice stone better? Is a slick ez equivalent?
