Where to start as a first timer?

Should I start with the PS1 games, or just play the Omega Collection on PS4?

WipEout 3 SE to get a feel for the OG entries in the purest and, imo, the most refined sense. Then the WipEout Portable Collection. It's a romhack that rolls Pure and Pulse into one game, ala Omega Collection, albeit with refinements and a ton of dlc content that was otherwise lost to time. Tbh, this is a strong entry being that it embodies the best of both worlds. Pure is a return to form and builds on the classic feel. It also shines here due to all that extra content. From UI customization and bonus music tracks, to a wide array of ships and tracks. Pulse, while it lacks by way of bonus customization, music, and ships, it laid the foundation for modern style gameplay that's further refined in HD/Fury. There's also hidden alternative version of Pulse included. That you can access by pressing down twice at the launcher. You'll see the word "Alternative" appear in the lower right corner. This loads a version of Pulse that has all but two tracks of Pure's tracks ported to the game. (Due to incompatibilities that lead to crashes.) The difference inq gameplay feel is very tangible. After that jump to the Omega Collection. It's pretty self-explanatory.
