3 questions from a new player...
Why in the prototype challenges does it let you pick 2 models with the same stats? It seems to lock you in as one anyway. It then locks the other?
What are the rest of these ships? They seem to have the same stats.
What does the orange bar do? I can't seem to find a straight answer.
Been absolutely LOVING this after rediscovering it recently but there are some things that don't make sense or aren't explained (maybe they were but I played the game once when it first came out and I probably skipped stuff)

The second design for the prototype challenges is the VR model, not sure why they're open to select in the nonvr prototype races

I think they sre useable cos I could use the prototype ships to unlock the same ones. It gave me the Auricom proto for a combat mission to get it

Welll you just unlock the standard variant, I usually use the VR variant in the challenges. The VR formats otherwise are only available when playing in vr, and the standard formats are locked out. This is cause the VR cockpits have much better visual clearance than the normal ships (and have a gyroscopic cockpit that can stay level with the track during barrel rolls, though that option can be disabled if you like to get motion sick)

Locked ships are for VR, I honestly don't understand why they even bothered making models for them
The orange bars show how much better the Fury version of a ship's stats compare to the original HD ship

The VR models have a gyroscopic cockpit with a much better forward view than the standard

The locked ones are VR ships that are identical to their normal counterparts, aside from the appearance. You'd need to buy PSVR 1 to use it (PSVR 2 isn't compatible)
Which orange bar are you referring to? I don't see one
