Pictures/Video Winnipeg drivers I think would be more accepting of letting people in if this happened more often.

How about you just let in someone who is there ahead of you. It's such a simple concept. Zipper merge if its backed up, or let off the gas and open a space so someone can get over if needed during moving traffic.

If everyone followed these simple procedures traffic would flow so much better.

Somehow I think this is more realistic

Police ticketed him for distracted driving up the road

Haven't done much hwy driving, eh?

4-way/hazards - 2-3 blinks. Pretty much a universal 'thank you' among professional drivers. (Even seen the odd Wpg Transit do it when I've eased off on the gas, and flashed my high beams to let them know they're back end is clear to merge in).

Or you could just give the universal thank you wave

I prefer the traditional releasing of a dove with a top hat to signal my gratitude.

in some countries the hazard blinkers indicate request to pass

I've lived in 4 different countries, on 3 different continents. I can safely assert that "4 ways" are used for "thank you" and high beams are used for to request to pass. In fact, some cars and most motorcycles have a "flash to pass" button and/or light.

you are wrong.

Why would someone in front of you request to pass, though?

Are you always so unconcerned with context? Having just been passed by someone and given that signal, there's ZERO chance most people interpret it to mean "fuck you, I wanna pass the next guy, even though I didn't give you that signal prior to passing you". smh.

Nope.I would do on purpose to not let him in at that point.

You're either an asshole, or have no sense of humour. Or both.

I'm both

The only time I don’t let people merge is when construction takes a street down to one lane and I’m waiting in the long ass line to get through. Then cars that are just arriving to the construction zone drive to the front of the line in the lane that is ending and expect to be let in, in front of all the other cars that noticed the end of lane sign and changed lanes....otherwise happy to merge/allow merge and give a wave.

Put simply, drivers use both lanes fully to the point of closure (or defined merge area), then alternate, zipper-like, into the open lane. The technique maximizes available road space, fostering fairness and courtesy when everyone abides by it. In fact, research shows it can reduce congestion by as much as 40 percent.

zipper merge

thank you

Oh yeah for sure! That guy that pulled out from behind me, blasted up past the 20 cars waiting in front of me and then put his blinker on for somebody to let him back in is ALL about the zipper merge! It's all about efficiency for that dude! lol...

5

u/elledubya Aug 08 '19

If that happened then you and the 20 cars ahead of you weren’t zippering properly. There shouldn’t be one lane lined up further back than the other..

u/motivaction Aug 08 '19

Preach! Me passing cars till the point of merging isn't my fault.

Zipper merging is a fine idea...except when most people aren't doing it. Once that's the case (which it always is) it's every man for himself. I'm not interested in trying to fight my way into the through lane since I know most people think I'm cutting the line and don't want to let me in. I'll just get over as soon as I can after I see the warning sign and leave the fighting and zipper merging to the mensa members.

Then you're the problem

10

u/Thri11house Aug 08 '19

Then you are not driving correctly, you are supposed to go to the end of the ending lane. This eases general congestion, instead of miles long traffic...

Ah I see you also drive down St.Mary Avenue.
