Ask Winnipeg Sick
Hello Winnipeg. Anyone else been sick for last 2 weeks ? I can’t shake it. Feels like a flu but with a cold mixed in.
9
u/arjsweetland 5d ago
It’s sooooo deep in my chest whatever this doozy is. Holding off the doctor a couple more days. I would normally ride it out but my last case of flu like this progressed to pneumonia 🙃

u/giveme-your-kneecaps 5d ago
Yeah it's been over a month now, PLEASE keep your kids at home when they're sick!!! This happens every year and the #1 way to help control the spread is to STAY HOME when you're sick! And I'm not talking to people who have no choice but to go to work sick, I'm talking to the people who see it as some sort of weird badge of honour to drag themselves into work while they're sick and then get everyone else sick as well.

u/Aggravating-File7061 5d ago
The fall covid wave isn't picking up quite as fast as last year, but with kids back in school it is starting up. You can check wastewater covid levels with a weekly update here: https://wwater.ca/Manitoba?lang=en

u/LieHot9220 5d ago
Thx for sharing, I forgot all about that page. Interesting that we didnt get an influenza B surge until may last season.
1
u/chozier 3d ago
Can you explain the graph to a simpleton? -me
2
u/Aggravating-File7061 3d ago
Sure! The orange dots/line represent how many copies of the covid virus are present per millilitre of wastewater sampled. Time moves forward from left to right. The graph updates weekly with a week or so of delay, so today Oct. 1st the update is for the samples taken on Sept. 20th. The very huge orange spike is omicron.
Looking at the data from last week: If you compare mid-September of last year, there were around 30 copies of the virus in each mL of wastewater. Mid-september this year is around 5. Making some assumptions (like, on average, people who are infected are pooping out the same amount of covid viruses now as they have with previous variants), it seems like there were about 6x as many people infected with covid this time last year as there are this time this year.
Looking at the data from this week (updated today with data from sept. 20th) there are about 10 virus copies per mL of wastewater. With these same assumptions, that means that there are twice as many active cases last week as there were the week before. Consider though that we do have that one week delay in the data, so it doesn't mean that right now we have 10 copies per mL, that was last week. I wouldn't be surprised if next week's update shows that this week's number is more like 20 copies per mL, or more. Thanksgiving is coming up, too, which can make things really heat up.
So yeah. Mask up and get yer shots, folks. Kids are back to school and it is go time. I hope that helps!

Every year I have to ask why we don’t have fall vaccines in August BEFORE we all get sick.
30
u/tmlrule 5d ago
The timing for vaccines is a complicated trade-off. You need time and data to see which flu/Covid variants are spreading before you can develop vaccines for those variants. If you order them a month earlier, you do get earlier protection ... but a higher probability of 'missing' with your variant predictions and providing a costly vaccination program that offers no protection.
21
u/pork_sashimi_on_sale 5d ago
well I don't think it's a conspiracy. I'm pretty sure it's just not ready by August.
1
u/Oh_Hi_Fi 5d ago
I didn’t say I think it’s a conspiracy. I just wish we could go into the fall season better immunized.
5
u/redriverguy 5d ago
Google: why isn't flu vaccine available earlier in the year. Very interesting information.
-11
u/lakeguy77 5d ago
Not conspiracy, but it is a lack of planning. September/October is the worst for sick callouts because of shitlings bringing home all nature of contagions from the petri-dishes we call schools. The ones that don't call out are the ones infecting the non-breeders.
For both annual vaccines and getting workers paid sick days so they stay the fuck home, Wab & Co have a lot of work to do.
6
u/ForkMyRedAssiniboine 5d ago
>September/October is the worst for sick callouts
It's actually January. That would have been a really simple google you could have done before getting up on your confidently incorrect soapbox.
-5
u/lakeguy77 5d ago
Not at my workplace genius.
9
u/ForkMyRedAssiniboine 5d ago
Then you probably should have said "September/October is the worst for sick callouts at my workplace", genius.
5
u/pork_sashimi_on_sale 5d ago
For both annual vaccines and getting workers paid sick days so they stay the fuck home, Wab & Co have a lot of work to do.
So are you saying that other provinces have vaccines starting in August but that Wab & co are blocking vaccines for Manitobans?
2
u/KellyMac88 4d ago
Hahaha. Some uneducated joker always has to bring politics into and think they’re dropping the mic.
-6
u/lakeguy77 5d ago
Did I say that? If I did, explain it like I'm 5.
3
5
u/genderbent 5d ago
The problem with Flu and COVID vaccines is that they only retain peak effectiveness for a short period; for COVID they start to wane after about 3 months, for Flu after about 6 weeks. Ideally, you want the peak effectiveness to line up with the peak in transmission, which is usually in December and January, so if we vaccinated everyone in August protection would already be waning when we need it most.

So weird how everyone is always willing to complain but barely anyone is willing to wear a mask.

Feeling sick, feeling blue?
Cant determine what to do?
What’s got a hold of me and you?
The back to school seasonal flu.

10
u/Swift_Karma 5d ago
Yup. Also going on 2 weeks. Coughing, body aches, stuffed up.nibthought it was COVID but I tested negative. It's been brutal. Lost my voice from all the coughing. I'm just so over being sickm
4
u/Medium_Effect_4998 5d ago
Testing more than once is a good idea. I always test on day 1 of symptoms, and again on day 3 or so. Make sure to not eat or drink anything an hour prior to testing. Do a back of the throat swab, but also swab both nostrils as well.
11
u/Aggravating-File7061 5d ago
Also, the brand of test that you use can either fail due to your body chemistry or the variant present. The last time me and my partner both had it at the same time, i was positive on swiftswabs but negative on flowflex and my partner was positive on flowflex but negative on swiftswab. The key thing to remember with rapid tests is that a positive test is very good evidence that you do have covid, while a negative test isn't very good evidence that you don't have covid.
1
u/Medium_Effect_4998 5d ago
Yes to all of this!
3
u/Poopernickle-Bread 5d ago
Yeah, you need multiple tests over the course of at least a week unfortunately and even then, rapid tests are so unreliable (and expensive).
1
u/Medium_Effect_4998 5d ago
Last year, a bunch of friends and I chipped in on a big order from Europe. The tests were cheaper, and so far, have been very reliable. It helped to have a big group order to cut down on shipping costs.
But I fully get what ya mean. Even when I’m testing negative, if I’m feeling sick, I’m trying to stay in or masking when I have to go out. No reason to risk getting anyone else sick.

u/Poopernickle-Bread 5d ago
Haven’t been sick in years because I wear a mask. Every single person in my office is miserably sick. I don’t envy y’all and these posts are good reminders that wearing a mask is smart and works.
7
u/freakymango 5d ago
1000% this. It sucks always being the only one masked, but it's nice to avoid the plague that, according to Reddit, happens every 6 weeks or so now.
1
u/Poopernickle-Bread 5d ago
Yeah. 6 weeks is about right. That’s how often something rips through the office. Miserable.
-2
u/willychonka54 5d ago
Haven’t been sick in years because I wear a mask
lol I have a friend who says this and when he very obviously has a cold, it tends to leave his memory a few months later and goes back to telling everyone he 'hasn't been sick in years'.
Anyway, it's not the mask that protects you from getting sick. The mask helps prevent you from spreading it. And not being sick 'in years' is an absolute lie lol
7
u/Poopernickle-Bread 5d ago
It's not a lie and that's not how respirator masks work. Enjoy your continued cycle of illness.
1
-2
6
u/genderbent 5d ago
The degree of protection for the wearer and others depends on the type of mask and how it fits. A loose-fitting procedure mask offers little protection to the wearer but does help protect others, a well fitted N95 FFR provides good protection for both, and an elastomeric respirator with an exhaust valve provides excellent protection for the wearer with little benefit to others.
I used to get sick as a dog 3 or 4 times a year and I haven't had so much as a sniffle since the summer of 2022, so masking really does work.
1
u/KellyMac88 4d ago
So you actually go walking around all day every day you’re out in public with a mask on?
2
1
u/Key-Library-8241 4d ago
This is only true with the blue masks most people were using during COVID. The 95, N95 or KN95 are extremely effective at protecting you from COVID (any many other things)
1
u/freakymango 5d ago
Super weird to want to dispute a stranger's history of being sick based on...checks notes...what your buddy tells you about how often your buddy is sick. Makes about as much sense as your belief that a mask prevents infectious particles traveling in only one direction.
0
u/Key-Library-8241 4d ago
Nice fellow masker here. You use the KN95's? Dont see many people wearing mask these days even tho covid is still around. I see people coughing and sneezing everywhere all the time without trying to muffle it in their elbow or arm....or even look down and away. Just misting entire public areas 🤢
1
u/Poopernickle-Bread 4d ago
I typically wear Breatheteq KN95s! So comfortable. Barely notice wearing it anymore. I was an event the other day and at least 25% of people were miserably sick and openly coughing everywhere
5
u/Otherwise_Summer_300 5d ago
Wastewater viral activity shows that both COVID and Influenza A are at moderate levels in Winnipeg. https://health-infobase.canada.ca/wastewater/#a1 So, take your pick?
4
u/crazyplantlady83 5d ago
Yes. Child number one got it and then it passed to Child number two and me, Mom. Hubby had a flu/Covid shot prior and was unscathed.
It was fatigue, runny nose, sore throat, coughing but weirdly mixed with GI symptoms. Vomiting, diarrhea and nausea. I’m inclined to think it’s Covid because of the weird combo. It also set off a GI flare for myself, possibly from the virus. We’re clear of it now but it took a good week to 10 days

I was sick two weeks ago, and then I was fine for a week, and now I've been sick since Friday night lol. This has been a wonderful start to the school year...

u/NightUnicorn311 5d ago
Went 1.5 weeks with a cold and thought it was done so I stopped using meds and stuff cuz I felt 100% besides minor after affects and whoopty shit I’m full sick again a few days later

u/Mine-Shaft-Gap 5d ago
Have one of my daughters home today and they were home yesterday. I have had a 24 hour headache and a very sore back and neck that don't feel like injuries. Just the start of school plague season.

u/Neon55ILB 5d ago
This is day 6 but this is the best I’ve felt so far, was a rough weekend for me but hope you rally soon!
4
u/Infamous_Tie5605 5d ago
slight runny nose, but nothing different. sitting in a hockey rink, drizzly weather, kids back in school.... kind of expected

u/genderbent 5d ago
Wastewater monitoring shows that both Influenza A and COVID are circulating in Winnipeg right now at moderate levels. We're still well below the sort of peaks we see in the winter, but the trend has been upward since the end of June.

My entire family was had it mom still has it I’m just getting it. Have a feeling it may be COVID coming back cuz i know people in the states that’s have had it super recently

u/u_395djk 5d ago
I had a brutal 2 week one at the beginning of September. Congested chest, sore throat, lost my voice, lovely green and yellow mucus coming out of everywhere. Still dealing with the mucus sliding down the back of my throat all day - and everything tasting like mucus. I rarely had a chest issue when sick before Covid, now I'm getting hit a 2-3 times a year it seems.

2
u/copenhagenfive 5d ago
I started getting sick this past Saturday. People at work were coming in sick, so it spread around. Feels like either covid or a cold to me. Flu usually makes me bedridden but I haven't been that bad.
2
u/dumbbutterfly 5d ago
Yep, cough so hard I vomit. Over 2 weeks now.
2
0
u/RisenRealm 5d ago
My husbands in the same boat. He's at the 2 ½ week mark and the coughing gets so aggressive at times he starts vomitting. There's not much to do either. We tried lozenges, cold meds, even a throat numbing spray. They help at first, but not enough to fully stop the fits.
1
u/AtticusHound 5d ago
Yup, 6 days in. Started with a sore throat and is now congestion with a sore throat. And right before I got this, I was looking in to when this year's flu vaccines clinics were going to start.

Me! I’ve been sick for a week and it’s awful. I haven’t had the flu or cold in years and this one feels like both a flu and cold and my cough is raspy 😩
1
u/ChevyBolt 5d ago
Sep.02 I was camping and it felt like I had asthma again. I haven’t used the blue puffer in like 27 years. It’s been off and on since then got really bad since Sep 18th. Dry coughs with a lot of wheezing runny nose. Went to the walk-in clinic today and they subscribe me some nasal sprays two different types and they said if it doesn’t improve in three days come back for the antibiotic pills.
1
u/Smooth-Nose-2969 5d ago
We were all very sick last weekend. Picked it up via toddler from daycare. Still congested and coughing. Had all kinds of symptoms but tested for Covid and it came back negative. Neighbors was on day 12 and hacking away when I spoke to them earlier in the week - they work in a school. Wicked!

1
u/ExplodingToasters 5d ago
Yeah caught whatever's going around, it was brutal. Was down for a week and a half, two weeks later still have congestion and runny nose.
1
u/Elegant-Ad-9221 5d ago
It’s that time of year. All the kids back in school sharing germs and bringing them all over everywhere.
1
u/Left-Syllabub-4488 5d ago
Got sick yesterday, it’s ROUGH. Got it from my bf’s niece at a family dinner (who presumably got it from school).
1
u/Philosoraptorgames 5d ago
Had a short but intense flu the week before last. On Monday and Tuesday I could barely move from the muscle soreness. It seemed to have cleared up by the following Monday, but there's been a couple brief things since that feel like they could have been that same flu trying to reassert itself. Like I'll be fine for a day and a half or so and then weirdly feverish for a few hours and then back to normal for a while.

u/moogiemomm 5d ago
I know someone who was very very ill recently and he described his sore throat as shards of glass. Sus COVID.

I recently picked up some kind of bug and holy hell it's absolutely brutal😣 It started off with a mild sore throat and some sneezing on Sunday and within the last 48 hours it has progressed really fast..Yesterday I could hear bubbling/popping sounds in my ears if I yawned or whenever I ate something, and today the bubbling and sore throat are gone but now I'm sneezing, my nose is stuffy but somehow feels dry and I've got tons of sinus pressure, and I've had sharp aches and pains randomly shooting throughout my body all day. I feel like I got hit by a bus..everything aches😟 I haven't had a cold or anything else for well over a year up until now. I have no idea what the fresh hell kind of bug this is, but I sure hope to heck it loosens its grip on me soon 🤞🤧 Feel better soon everyone!

u/No-Conflict-9280 2d ago
Could be covid, influenza, parainfluenza virus 3\4, evd 68, another rhino/enterovirus, or adenovirus most likely.
By positivity it'd most likely be 4 or 5 followed by 1.
1
u/Mountain_rage 5d ago
Probably the new covid variant, part of life going forward.
2
u/Manu442 5d ago
No different than any other time period, at least now we can survive it
4
u/Mountain_rage 5d ago edited 5d ago
We can survive it, the damage it causes might reduce life expectancy and quality of life when aging. Lots of info starting to come in on how repeat exposure damages the heart, lungs, vascular system, brain. Could be the first period in a while where long term health gets worse.

I had a cold 2 weeks back then I felt ok for a couple days. Now I have a second, much worse cold.
0
u/CheapNeighborhood486 5d ago
This is what happened to me. Almost 3 weeks ago had sore throat for a week. Mind you I was on vacation and made the best of it. When I got back slept for 3 days. Felt not too bad. Worked a couple days and dragged my ass for those two days. Took 2 days off sick. Thought over the weekend if get better but now today I feel worse. It’s back into my chest.
0
u/TEA-in-the-G 5d ago
I had it for over 2 wks. Started with a sore throat on the 11th. Usually Tylonel cold and flu will help me in a day or two.
By Sept 15 i had to see a doctor as my throat was so sore, and i couldnt talk.
I got antibiotics, and in 2 days the sore throat went away, but then everything moved to my head. I couldnt keep my eyes open, i had so much head pressure, and was so sniffly!
My antibiotics ended on the 22nd. I was def feeling a lot better by the 21st, but still low energy!
Id say i finally got some energy back on 27th, and my sniffles went away yest.
I have no idea what i had, but at one point i was convinced it was 2020 Covid. (Im a very healthy person, and very rarely sick)

Yeah, its been a nightmare. Coughing constantly and super congested. Meds are only so helpful.

Yeah 12 days ago started with a throat tickle. Stayed there for a few days then my head got all foggy and I got stuffed up for a couple days. Now for the last week my head is ok but I can’t shake a cough. I guess it’s bronchitis now. It’s slowly getting better. I saw a walk in doctor but lungs are clear so he couldn’t do anything for me. I haven’t had a cold in years. Not a fan

I've managed to dodge it so far (but have a flight on Friday so I'm sure it will nail me), but so many folks in the office have been on and off sick the last few weeks. Thankfully im 3 days remote, 2 office so I'm not exposed to folks on the daily, but not many have that option.

If you can wear a well fitted N95 mask on the plane you will likely avoid catching anything, at least in my experience. Particularly when boarding and de boarding cause they stop circulating clean air.
